'Baraka'
The gist: Originally released in 1992 as a sort of latter-day 'Koyaanisqatsi,'Baraka' is a feast for the eyes and mind. Shot in glorious 70mm, the film takes the viewer through a journey around the globe (24 countries in total) by featuring breathtakingly detailed and gorgeous shots of waterfalls, tribal dances, bustling cities, burning oil fields, and assembly lines of little baby chicks -- there is, of course, a message about the how wonderful and horrible our world is alongside the phenomenal eye candy.
Why It's on our list: This is perhaps the reference Blu-ray to top all reference Blu-rays for sheer visual brilliance, from the unparalleled detail on the opening scene's Macaques lounging around the water and the mesmerizing shots of Niagara Falls to the sped-up images of Manhattan's traffic grids and the slow-mo shots of whirling dervishes. Add a lossless DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack featuring a hypnotic, ethereal score by Michael Stearns, and you've got one of the best ways to show just how magnificent your TV display (and Blu-ray player) can be.
