I'd use my Tom-Tom more but the directions it give are really wacky! On one trip that I have made many times, the actual directions are straight NORTH on the interstate----ONE interstate, no side roads at all till I get to the destination city----but the GPS had me going downtown in a neighboring town to me (which is the OPPOSITE direction from getting on the interstate for me--I live only 4 miles from the interstate, going downtown adds almost 40 miles--then going SOUTH for 25 miles, then WEST for over 100 miles. Then finally north, but at EVERY exit it had me getting OFF the interstate and taking back roads. Their directions said it would take me 6 hours and 47 minutes to make a trip that I have made many times in 3½ hours!

Cricket, your Tom Tom has a setting that will make the directions prefer Interstates or local roads. It sounds to me like your unit is set to use surface roads whenever possible; you can fix this by spending a few minutes reading the manual and changing settings.

Christopher, I understand about the surface roads. And I did eventually find the setting for Interstates, altho it was not in the manual. I had to call the company to find that out. But even with it set for surface roads, that doesn't explain it sending me downtown, then south, then west, and making the trip take almost twice as long as it does using the interstate. There just IS no logical explanation at all for that one. Even Tom-Tom employees couldn't figure that one out. They pulled it up on their system and came up with the same thing. Then looked at the map and were shocked at the difference.
Needless to say they said they'd look into it and get back to me. But this was in Nov and I still haven't heard from them. Typical.
It's not just Tom-Tom either. My husband has a Gamin and has come across similar instances with his.
