More Than Four Million Health Records Breached in 2008

2008 was a year of financial chaos, political change, and the return of frozen yogurt. It was also a year of security breaches for the healthcare industry -- a rather alarming 4.07 million healthcare were compromised this year. According to researcher DataLoss DB, the number was roughly four times the number of breaches in 2007.
According to USA Today, much of it isn't even done online: the breaches often occur through sketchy employees or the physical theft of tapes. Earlier this month, a former employee at the UCLA Medical Center pleaded guilty to selling Britney Spears and Farrah Fawcett's medical records to the National Enquirer.

Data breach notices have a scalability problem. As the number of notices soars, we need to better define what is a serious breach and what is not. Otherwise, the public drowns in breach notices, many of which are insignificant. --Ben http://hack-igations.blogspot.com/2007/12/does-lost-tape-equate-to-lost-data.html
