It's hard to say if this rumor is true, but it's not behavior that Best Buy has avoided in the past. In fact, we vividly remember this
exact same scenario happening in late 2006 -- the
difference? That was the Wii's
launch year. This is two years later.
Two. Years. Later. Oh, and it's totally a futile effort, considering that Wally World sold through "
tens of thousands" in about four milliseconds. Seriously people, there's a
new Elmo to wage holiday war on, you have no business scrapping for a Wii 25 months after it hit US shores.*

Best Buy is not hoarding. Depending on how big the store is all depends on how many Wiis they get. If they are a bigger store, then they are going to receiver more versus a smaller store. My cousin works at a Best Buy and we had to wait just like everyone else to get one. Just because she works there did not mean we got one because they are not allowed to hold items. So, just get over it. They sell out because everyone wants them, not because they are hoarding!!!

Actually the fool manager told the employee to lie so he does get the blame.

and by the way it is against the law to advertise a product for sale you don't have. There is no way to prove the lap top wasn't sent but a lot of places do this to sell you higher priced items.

Of course they are hoarding! This happens every year with the most popular 'gift of the year'.

I cannot fathom how any products you purchase at Circuit City go "belly up" if CC goes "belly up." If CC were to go out of business, my laptop, my router, my camera, and my camcorder are not going to... go out of business. See? That notion makes zero sense. They're not going to stop working or lose their value, either. Oh, and I have three year accidental protection plans on both my camera and my camcorder because I do lots of outdoor activities with them. Guess what? The warranty is through another company that does warranties for Best Buy, Sears, RadioShack, and other electronics retailers. If I need to redeem my warranty, its not like I have to go CC anyways, I've had to use it once, and all I did was call a number and the next day I had a new product sitting on my doorstep. 'Your product goes belly up if the store you bought it at goes belly up.' Lets think about statement....

I work at a Best Buy and we had to "hoard" only what was the minium number for Wiis for each store advertised in next week sales. Which were only 12 Wiis, everything else has been going straight to the floor and selling out in a matter of hours. I don't know about other stores, but our manager is very very hardcore about the waiting period for employee sales, even on Black Friday. We get caught, we get fired.

Ok, Best Buy isn't my favorite place either but I doubt they need to keep that many Wiis concidering they normally do the exact opposite.
Typically around here you get an sale paper go in just to find out they don't have the item you're wanting. Case in point, my wife wanted to get a MP3 player for her dad for his birthday and we got a sale paper saying that they were selling the same one she had for 20 bucks less starting on a certain date. So, we went in just to find them tell us that the sale was only on a particular item number and they didn't have that item number. In this case, the item numbers were various colors of the same thing. The black one is the only one they had on sale and they didn't even have a spot for it. We asked if they could check and see if they had any in the back or something since the they didn't have the item listed on the shelf. If it's not on the shelf, then they don't have it we were told, then the sales man turned and helped someone else.
I still shop at Best Buy from time to time but far less than I used to and I always remember that experience when I see an impulse item I kinda want. I know the guy on the floor has no control only what comes out in the paper so I don't directly blame him, but if they're gonna bait and switch me then I'm going to avoid them and tell my friends to avoid them. This year several big companies are closing their doors, if places like best buy don't start treating their customers like valued sources of revenue it may only be a matter of time before they're out too.

My son wants a wii for christmas so instead of getting up at the crack of dawn and hope for one, I just hopped online, went to gamestop and ordered one. They had tons so it was easy. ToysRUs also had some online too.

Seriously, this country needs to get a grip on their pathetic lust for all these little electronic gadgets. People waited in lines for that iphone thing, I know people who are buying their toddlers ipods, and people are still all over this Wii game system. This is a brief glimpse of why so many families are in debt and going bankrupt - because so many people feel that they need the newest electronics. Does anyone ever go out and actually play a sport any more or do they do that on Wii too? Do they take their kids to parks or libraries or is that done on Wii? Quit living your lives on the Wii game system and actually go out and experience life for real.

yes, I agree best buy stinks, but as far as the sale paper is concerned. those ads are planned out and printed months in Advance. there is no way to determine how popular an item is going to be when they go to print. that is all the manufactors and suppliers fault.

Who cares about this shit?! I'm still waiting for O'Bama, the Irish Jig, to send me my check!!
JasonDec 13th 2008 1:58PM

I happen to know for a fact our Best Buy is hoarding wiis. I have a friend that works at our store and when I was there yesterday they told me that they had wiis in the back. However, they could not sell them until Sunday. No problem, lots of other stores in our area have them. If Best Buy doesn't want my money I can spend it elsewhere.
