It's hard to say if this rumor is true, but it's not behavior that Best Buy has avoided in the past. In fact, we vividly remember this
exact same scenario happening in late 2006 -- the
difference? That was the Wii's
launch year. This is two years later.
Two. Years. Later. Oh, and it's totally a futile effort, considering that Wally World sold through "
tens of thousands" in about four milliseconds. Seriously people, there's a
new Elmo to wage holiday war on, you have no business scrapping for a Wii 25 months after it hit US shores.*

I recently went to my local Supermarket and they had a pile of at least 50 Wiis there. (Shoprite in Hauppauge). Go to any Gamestop on a Wednesday afternoon (when shipments come in) and get one.My son got his in May of 2007 and still loves it. He's playing Animal Crossing right now. Remember, the big box stores are not the only place that carries them.

there are some pretty awesome games for this system, i have to say, i keep finding new ones that aren't even marketed that just rock...there is one i got at walmart ($20 instead of the usual $50) and it has like every 'bar sport' on it....darts, beer pong (ping cup they call it), shuffleboard, trivia, basketball, skee ball, etc... totally totally awesome game! plus the price was right :) radio shack also sells it for that same price...i can't remember the name but its sooooo cool

we go through thus every year with Best Buy. Another trick they pull is they advertise bargain plasma tvs, then you go and no store in a 50 mile radius has any., I am sick of dealing with them.
DawnDec 13th 2008 7:13AM
The same thing happened to us...went to buy a Plasma and they were not in stock...and nothing anywhere near their had any in stock...BUT they worked for us until they found one....had it shipped to THEIR Store at no cost to us AND gave us an awesome Mini wine fridge as an apology gift....I'll deal with them ANY time....

Best Buys and the Goon Squad can go the way of KB Toys. I would rather go through the ordeal of buying a used car from Larry the Loser down at the "Drive it, Tow it or Bring it in in a basket" used car dealer then to deal with Best Buys. I know it is BEST BUY but it pi$$e$ them off when you say Best BuyS.
Best Buy SucksDec 13th 2008 6:32AM
I had an interesting ...as usual, experience with our local Best Buy store in Western Mass. last year. They advertised a particular laptop computer, which my wife and I wanted to purchase for our daughter. The sales flyer arrives with a start date of the next day. We were expecting a fair amount of snow overnight so we decided to head out early and be one of the first at the store that morning. The weather was so bad, we weren't one of the first we were thee first at the store. We could see the clerks inside and a perfect view of the computer area. The store opened, we went directly to the computer department, only to be told by a "sales loser" that it was already sold out. I asked him how it could be sold out when the sale only started a minute earlier and due to the weather we were the only customer's in the store. He had the normal "oh my God what did they train me to say in this situation" look on his face. I went at it with a manager, who finally admitted that they never arrived. The fool then helped me find a replacement at an equal price. That was my last trip to Best Buy and will remain my last trip. Best Buy sucks and I swear they are taught to lie.
TrixieDec 13th 2008 6:45AM
Best Buy Sucks I hate to mention this, but that "sales loser" has nothing to do with what gets shipped to the store he happens to work at. Guess what.. neither did that "fool" of a manager. They also didn't control the weather or who sent out the ads. Way to direct your anger.

I agree! Best Buy treats their customers like criminals. I was treated like dirt 8 years ago and have never been back. I even went on their website to complain and heard nothing.
I'm bummed that Circuit City is having to close so many stores. I shopped there over BB.
In these days of so many store closings, BB needs to be more customer focused, losers.
daveDec 13th 2008 1:31PM
Trixie, I'm also positive that those Wii's they're hoarding this year got up off the pallette and walked themselves into the back as well. Best Buy is one of the WORST customer service oriented retailers available to us consumers.
Everything from their employee's posting peoples private pictures when they bring computers in to be worked on, to hoarding childrens toys....to flat out lying to consumers. Shame on them, shame on you for defending them. Best Buy should be renamed Best Lie.

I bought a laptop from Bestbuy and it didn't work. It kept going into hibernation mode at any given moment and I had to turn the computer off and lose any unsaved work. The geeksquad said that there was nothing wrong with it after running a systems check and said it was not faulty therefore if I wanted to exchange it I would have to pay a 15% re-stocking fee. So they tried to make me pay 15% on a $1200.00 computer. I took the computer home and called the corporate office and they called the local store and jumped their a*sses. Only then was I able to exchange it without paying the re-stocking fee.
5-6 years ago I bought a 56" rear projection TV from Best buy. When they delivered it there was a tear in the speaker cover that they refused to replace. They told me that I would have to get in touch with the manufactor to order another one, or find a store that sold them and they would take off the cost of the speaker cover from the TV. I found it 2 days later for $50.00 at Conn's and told them it cost me $250.00. They took $250.00 off the price.
My wife and I bought a camera yesterday from Circuit city. We could have bought it for $200.00 cheaper at Best buy but I told my wife HELLNO!!
DawnDec 13th 2008 7:14AM
Hate to break this too you sparky...but Circuit City is belly up after the holidays...so if that camera of yours goes belly up too...you're SOL.
SueDec 13th 2008 9:08PM
Not everything that glitters is gold... I could tell you horror stories about WalMart and definitely Circuit City... truth be told, we're all going to be shopping at WalMart because that will be the only store around... then wait and see what prices you pay! Competition among stores and well-read consumers makes for better Christmas mornings!

Best Buy is knkown for the not having the sales items in stock because they sell them to the employees before they open the doors. My daughter caught them in the situation in Arkansas a few years back on Black Friday (she was first in line at the door). There was a news crew there and she got their attention and within minuets she was given rainchesks for a few of the laptops that were sent to her home. Best Buy also advertise items online and state that they are in a store. You go to the store and they say they are out of stock, but would gladly sell you a more expensive one. I would not trust them as far as I could throw the store.
TaraDec 17th 2008 11:35PM
Well I can say that I have worked in about 10 different Best buys over the past 8 years, and I know that when a high in demand product is being released for the first time, employees are not allowed to purchase it until usually a few weeks, or even months after release, even if they go on their day off and wait in line. Even when employees purchase ban is lifted, we still have to wait in line with customers. I did this last year at a Nashville store for a Wii. I waited in line for hours in the cold with everyone else, and customers were quite please to know that BB employees had to stand outside also.It seems that some of you have had some bad experiences at some stores, but all retailers have horror stories from customers. BB employees do not get to purchase anything before customers. Sry for those of you, who have had a bad experience.

I would like to know why all these comments have a "reply" button on them except the ones left by "Dawn".
Sounds to me like "Dawn" is a Best Buy employee.
SatanlkaDec 13th 2008 1:39PM
There is no reply under Dawn's comments because they are already replying to someone else. If you want to reply under the same theard hit reply to the orginal post and it will appear under Dawn's. Hope that helps.

If you are replying to one of the comments you do not have a reply in your box, only the original poster.

Yes, I think both Dawn and Trixie are Best Buy employees or at least paid to sing their praises. I totally don't believe the story about the store searching around for one to ship to their store and the mini-wine refridge as an aplogy gift. Sure that is how it should work but a store that has so much business is NOT going to go out of it's way to appease one shopper.
Stephanie MDec 13th 2008 9:52AM
First of all I doubt Dawn is a Best Buy employee - probably just someone that didn't put an email address or invalid - thus the no reply - do you think Best Buy employees have magic log-ins at various sites?
The reason she said that is simple - who are you going to call to fulfill your warranty obligations if Circuit City doesn't just reduce the number of stores but folds completely?
Best Buy is a big box store - as is Circuit City. I prefer CC but same difference really.
If you use the tools they provide on the website (or just order the big sales online the day before thanksgiving like I did) no problem and like many others have said if they don't have what's advertised demand to see a manager - if the manager doesn't fix it - call corporate FROM THE STORE.
You are not going to get spectacular customer service from a big box store without being an informed consumer that can advocate for yourself. These are minimum wage employees and many aren't exactly considering the position their dream job. Is it right that you have to fight for what they have promised? No. It is the reality however.
There are plenty of resources online these days to find the best prices and you have a phone to confirm it's in stock. With most places offering free shipping on orders over $50 or $100 these days it's often easier to just buy online or support smaller stores.
Another option is refurbished items that carry the same warranty - I've gotten great deals with these 9 times out of ten.
