'Sexting' From Your Cell Phone Is Hot New Flirting Trend, Study Finds

Apparently teens taking risqué photos of themselves is turning into a full-on epidemic. Researchers from Teenage Research Unlimited have finally put some hard numbers to the anecdotes about teens getting themselves in trouble with revealing photos.
According to the study, commissioned by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and CosmoGirl.com, 22-percent of teenage girls and 18-percent of boys have taken nude or semi-nude photos of themselves and sent them to someone or posted them online. And a third of young adults (20-26 years old) have done the same.
Young adults and teens view sending these photos and suggestive text messages as simple digital flirting. 39-percent of teens and 59-precent of those young adults say they've sent naughty texts a means of flirting.
Often, however, these photos do not stay private. The statistics clearly indicate that such revealing photos are often shared, usually after a break up. Over a third of teenage boys and 40-percent of young men have reported receiving or seeing such private photos.
Even though 73-percent of those surveyed understood that sending revealing photos could have serious negative consequences, it seems like many are choosing to ignore the danger and share them anyway. [From: USA Today]

Today's yuppie-larva have gotten quite out of control. And to imagine that these youngens will someday be running the country (if we make it that far). No moral values, and a lack of conscience on most of their parts.....................hmmmm perfect fit for Washington!

Yes they said the same thing about kids in the 60's Once again sending a nude photo , though not very wise in my opinion, does not make one a social failure, without morals, ect ect so on so forth ad nauseum. This is not new behavior, its new technology. People say they have "ruined themselves for life " if it is so common i doubt anyone will care enough to deny someone a job-first it will have been ommon for thier peers and second youd be cuttin out a third of your workforce because they sent a nasty picture. Lets be realistic. Its not the 50's anymore. BTW, if youll notice this much more common among the adults doin the complaining than the kids who are doin the same thing. Sure the difference is they are kids, and im not saying it should be allowed, but i see no need for this "end of the world" fall of America paranoia these kids arent doing anything the rest of us wouldnt have done if we had the same technology.

Kyle--Not that this will matter to you, however, I teach childbirth classes to teens, yes... that's my job. My favorite part of class is when I get to talk about STD's. Some of these kids have never heard about all the gross stuff you can get. My favorite pictures to show are the ones where this 17 year old guy literally CANNOT CLOSE HIS MOUTH for all the Genital Warts that have grown around it!! It is the grossest thing I've seen! We also play "What's my discharge?" a couple of times a week at the health dept. (Guys & Gals)
Also for others, did you know that if a nude photo of any child, your own or other parents child is found on any phones of which you are responsible, (name is on the bill), you can be arrested for child pornograpy. You get a record as a sex offender. It is permanent and can interfere with where you try to live, obtaining employment, etc. My husband is a judge. Just something to think about.

Should they wait until they are older, fat and really unattractive to take these photos?
camyDec 11th 2008 12:24PM
What kills me is the sexism in the article-mentioning that boys admitted seeing the nude photos of others. Why didn't they ask the girls the same question? I saw many girls sharing nude photos of boys on the bus going to work. They even talked about who had the biggest and the best looking. My point is girls do it too!! They think only guys are like this in these sexist articles!!

Things have sure come a long, long way since the time Jeff, in high school, 1965, gave me his graduating class ring and his fraternity sweater!

Not so fun when your reciepient decides to forward your "sexy"(slutty) pics to everyone on their contacts list. Reputation shot, self respect shot. I would not do it.
RDec 11th 2008 10:21AM
Omg get over yourselves people! The people who are against "teen sexuality" here just need to go get laid! Just because your 16 year old daughter has better sex then you doesn't mean you have to get jealous!
tresbonDec 11th 2008 10:01AM
Kids, please keep your clothes on. I don't want to see you naked. Thanks!

How many of you have ever seen the e-mail circulating talking about everything that all the baby-boomers did as kids that kids now adays don't do, eating candy before inspecting it on halloween, cracking open a fire hydrant and playing in the water, etc. etc. etc. and yes, kids today CAN'T do those things anymore because the baby-boomer generation has decided that their kids need better protection, so they have to wear helmets when riding bikes - mandated by law. must be in child seats until 7 years old in Pennsylvania - mandated by law. 11:00 curfew - in my city, this may be different for others - for those under age 18. the list of what we CAN'T do anymore goes on and on and on! You keep taking away freedoms that you used to LOVE doing, of course we're going to make up new ways to have fun! we can't go ride our bike down to the neighbor girls house and play skin the cat in the tree without you making sure we've got elbow pads, knee pads, helmet, jock strap, and chastity belt on, so we're going to text the girl down the street naked pictures because jerking off in our rooms is all we have left after you've taken everything else away.

Morons all. Entering the abyss Orwell described and fulfilling the n adage "The quality of life is but strained" . We should have a draft bill by September . That will cause a shift in priorities .

I wish I could have seen a lot of the guys naked when I went to school! I had to buy Playgirl to get off!! I had to hide it because girls caught with it were considered bad but it was alright for boys to have Playboy. Society was always stupid and sexist! Don't listen to society!!
