Traditionalists might balk, but the holiday shopping season is already underway. Skeptical? Head to your local department store and you'll be inundated by Christmas trees and ornaments. Bargain hunters, though, know that the real deals are more than a month away.
Black Friday, traditionally, is when retailers truly slash prices. Early birds can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars off of their holiday bills. Switched.com checked with a few elves, who gave a sneak peek at what you can expect deal-wise this year.
Blu-ray Players and Movies: Blu-ray is shaping up to be the biggest door buster of this year's Black Friday. de Grandpre expects at least one retailer will offer a Blu-ray player for just $49. Look for bargains on Blu-ray films as well, with last year's hit titles (such as "Iron Man") to fall as low as $5.
Laptops: With the proliferation of Netbooks this year, it's never been easier to find affordable portable computing, but Dan de Grandpre, CEO of DealNews.com says it will get even cheaper on Black Friday. Look for well-equipped Netbooks to sell for $199 – and basic 15" laptops to go for as little as $249.
HDTVs (Pretty big): The holidays are typically the best time to buy a new TV – and Black Friday is the time to do it. If you're looking for a normal sized set, you're in luck. Piper Jaffrey analyst Mitch Kaiser says he expects to see 32-inch LCD sets for as low as $299. GottaDeal.com is estimating 37-inch plasma and LCD sets will fall to $399 or less.
HDTVs (Really big): Need something bigger? How about a 46-47 inch LCD set for $599 – a 25 percent savings? Or a 52-inch LCD for $999? Dealnews says you can expect both. Plasma deals will be a little harder to come by, but a 50-inch set should run roughly $899.
HD Camcorders: You've wanted to shoot your child's school play in HD for a while, but haven't been able to spring for the pricey camcorder. This might be the year. Low-end, flash-based 720p models could drop as low as $60 (though you won't be able to zoom with those). Expect a high quality 1080p HD camcorder for $349.
GPS: While navigation systems have dramatically expanded their reach this year – even making it onto the iPhone – there's still a market for car-based systems. Dealnews predicts you'll be able to find a no-name entry-level system for $49, while a Garmin or Tom-Tom brand will be as low as $69.
Digital Picture Frames: Showcasing your digital pictures consistently gets cheaper. This year, skip the 7-inch screens and focus on the 8- or 9-inch ones, which should be available on Black Friday for as little as $30.
Monitors: Computer monitors might not be the sexiest of gifts, but they're usually welcomed with open arms – and they'll be cheap this year. Name brand 22-inch LCD models may go for as low as $99, while 24-inch models will drop below $150.
Memory: Don't know anyone who needs a monitor? External hard drives are always popular, since they're an easy way to back-up data. Dealnews expects a 1TB drive to fall as low as $49 this year. Gottadeal is looking for 8GB flash drives to hit $15.

It is misleading for sure. I wonder if there was something on there where the motorcycle just kept going for four hours then advised you to see a doctor.

I don't think there should be ANY tv ads promoting medication for erectile dysfunction. It is very embarrasing, especially when your 8 year old child asks what erectile dysfunction is. Also, ads about genitle herpes are embarrasing for the same reason. The general population are familiar enough of the meds available for these problems. Of course, they need to see their doctor anyway.

You know, I agree with you. Actually, I think all of this junk -- Tampex, condoms, etc., should be prohibited from TV and radio.
It simply isn't appropriate. It has nothing to do with restricting free speech.

TV ads for meds for E.D. and Genital Herpes should all be pulled. It is very embarrasing to try to explain to your young child(ren) about these things when they ask. The general population already knows about these meds, and of course, they need to see their doctor anyway.

glad you weren't my parent, afraid and embarassed to talk to your child, who you are supposed to be guiding and raising,
okay nancy-boy, let society teach them all that good stuff
dusty said 4:24PM on 11-25-2008
you are a dumbass! try explaining to your child the facts of life instead of being all "embarrased". damn, dude, your name is steve but you act more like a stephanie. besides that, why pull just those ads? why not pull ALL medication ads? you sound like a communist.

I guess one of the risks they forgot to mention was bending over to pick up something along the highway while riding your motorcycle and your Viagra-induced erection gets caught in the spokes! YIKES!!

So you have a problems with explaining things to your 8 yr old. I particularly resent showing ultrasounds on fat hairy pregnant bellies at meal time or how woman can now swim and ride a bike wearing their new kotex and tampon. WTF!! Now THAT is disgusting and how do you explain THAT?

Sorry, I have a hard time accepting that this constitutes a good use of our tax dollars. In as much as Pfizer has more than recovered the developmental costs of Viagra -which was an accidental side benefit in the first place- the FDA & would better serve the American people by allowing generics to be introduced into the market place. Only the fat cats at Pfizer have gained from the 20+years of a virtual monopoly on this drug. Sadly, we are duped into believing that focusing on advertising means that the FDA is doing a good job. How about banning ALL prescription drug advertising and put the decision of which drugs to prescribe back in the hands of the Doctors and pharmacies where it belongs.
And for all you drug company apologists out there, don't bother responding, no one is going to believe a word you say. It's all about the bucks and gouging as many of them as possible out of the pockets of your customers.

I agree!
My wife and I are in the Caribbean and recently had to renew two prescriptions. At home they cost about $180 a month without insurance. Here we were able to get the exact same prescriptions in sealed boxes from the same company for less than half the price ($64 for one and $80 for the other). Why does the rest of the world pay less for drugs than the USA? I know companies have to pay for research or we won't get new and better medications, but why the difference. If this is what the Fed is providing, who needs them.
People in the USA like to think we are the most advance country in the world and in many ways we are, but that is changing and unless we start paying attention to the important things we will become just like every other former world leader, a has been. Capitalism has worked well for us. Not because it was unfettered, but because the worse abuses were illegal. Today many of those safeguards have been repealed and has taken over. It isn't a coincidence that usury laws have almost disapeared and at the same time restrictions on bankruptcy have been inacted. Who hasn't received unsolicited offers for credit cards or blank checks in the mail. Just spend the money and become an indentured servant for life. What's next, debtors prisons? Is it any wonder the banking sytem is in colapse? They sucked people in with low interest short term loans to buy their "dream house" and then in a couple of years the refinancing triples their mortgage payment. So what is our government's response, bail out the same people who started the problem.
And while I'm on a rant, why spend $80 billion bailing out an insurance company. Who cares? If they go under, just pay your premiums to someone else.
I would like an intelligent response to these questions .

why is it embarassing to talk to your child? about anything! that's horrible - i can't imagine being embarassed about any condition when talking to and EDUCATING a child (of any age)
so it's an online game without warning, shouldn't doctors give those anyhow when you go to get the prescription? and if your kid finds the game online, take the kid away from the computer and put him/her outside with a ball or a bike

Amy, ,you are obviously very young, inexperienced at life, and have no children...or else you were raised in a lower class environment wi thout a clear understanding of morals and values in life. Mature persons know that there are just some things that very young children should not be exposed to...would you allow your 6 or 8 year old to watch a porno movie??? young minds should be kept as young and fresh and pure in spirit as possible for as long as possible. Maybe one day when you are all grown up and have children of your own, you, hopefully, will feel different, a mother, grandmother, and nurse, in florida.

Either you have no children or your an any thing goes kinda mom. How in the heck do you explain to a bright 6 year old what ED is? Ya Come on tell us in words that a 6 year old can understand about ED. Get real. These adds are stupid. ED should be kept between your doctor and partner. And the adds are so stupid it it doesn't make sense. We have this man he has taken his "pill" and they're setting out in 2 bath tubs full of water on a mountain side. Really where does that make sense?
to becky said 6:21PM on 11-25-2008
you must not be much of a parent if your 6 yr old is watching tv with ed ads....way to interact with your child, stick them in front of a television, haha, great parenting!
jazi said 1:59PM on 11-26-2008
its simple really, your child asks what ED is, you say,
"when your older, sometimes you body parts dont work like they should. now they have medicine to fix that."
you didn't "corrupt" your child but you didn't lie to them either. And with the herpes, a good way to explain is.
"you know how you get a cold sometimes? herpes is kinda like that, its a disease...but unlike your cold herpes doesn't go away. They have medicine to treat that. So the people can get better."
If they want to know more you simply say "YOUR NOT OLD ENOUGH." very easy.
And besides that, if your too embarrassed to talk to your children about their bodies, they will grow up hearing about it from their friends or worse not hearing about it at all and then making a HUGE mistake. i understand its embarrassing but it'll be even more embarrassing when they tell you "im gonna be a parent!" and their only 14. please get over your embarrassment now because it will be harder in the future.

i agree, you should be able to talk to your kids about disease and conditions of all types. Make it a mature, informative conversation. Communication early on will make it easier for your children to talk to you about personal things down the road.
and yes, too many children are on the Internet just sitting, staring at a screen and gaining weight, go outside and play! or even just sit outdoors and read a book
