Irony is bittersweet. Historically speaking, Americans cannot truly claim the title 'first' in either airplanes or automobiles. History is full of information and people who came before us in the development. The turnaround of the truly 'first' American invention "the microwave" can also be seen as a major contributor to the health issues and obesity problems in the US and now the world, as they are also now constructed mainly overseas. Additionally, history shows that the CEO's of GM systematically purchased and dismantled inner-city street rail system across the US in order to push the gas-powered car. They are getting their comuppance, or as with the development of the first automobile they are credited with, they will ride on the shoulders of all the other companies and engineers who have already solved the energy problem for cars and trucks and finally start producing them. Unfortunately, laden with expensive union wages and benefits and therefore too expensive to buy. Of course, Ford could sell to Americans the 4 or 5 models which are hugely fuel efficient and best sellers that they've only been making and selling in europe.
