Facebook 101: 25 Tips and Tricks

Chances are, if you're not on Facebook already, then you're likely to be getting on it pretty soon. Whether it's your kids or your next door neighbor (or those old friends you just reunited with at your high school reunion), folks around you have been hounding you to sign up, set up a profile, and start "social-networking" with all your friends, and their friends, and so on. Truth is, social-networking sites such as Facebook (and MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn, etc) are increasingly turning into the first place people go when they get on the Internet, as these services offer e-mail, chat, music players, photo sharing, and so much more beyond just staying in touch with your Friends.
But the best (or worst) part about Facebook is all the people from your past who come out of the woodwork (we're talking grade-school past). All this means you'll want to look your very best on your Facebook profile, and make the best use of all that the service has to offer, which is why we've come up with 25 tips that'll optimize your social-networking experience. Try 'em out by clicking on 'Next' below, and if you've got any tips we've missed, please let us know!

I'm sorry you feel so down on old people, just remember some day it will happen to you to.
I think people who are confined to home should get online and meet people to talk to and share similar likes.
I don't know how old is old to you but to me its anyone collecting social security and unable to find work and is stuck at home.

BE CAREFUL on Facebook. I stupidly downloaded an "upgrade your wall" & it completely wrecked my computer. It took at least an hour on the phone with the computer techs & the internet provider each to reboot my system. I didn't read about the worm or virus that is hidden there or in Myspace- until AFTER I downloaded it. What a pain.

I was really enjoying my myspace until my daughter in law decided to use it as a battleground, spreading vicious lies & spewing a previously hidden hatred & jealousy of me & my daughter. She even went as far as to telling myspace that photos of my grandchildren on there were in violation of the rules {Obsenity/not w/permission} & they removed them, without even telling me-&with a warning that I would be deleted if it happened again. Now she jumps in & out using fake accounts she sets up, makes rude comments & such & jumps back out. I think she uses the law firm she works for to intimidate & get access somehow. My complaints to their tech support dept are not resolved, so the security on it is TERRIBLE. I know I could block her as she blocked me-but I let her do it & print it out in case they ever do really delete me, or try to imply any wrongdoing on my part. It's sad, but that's how easy it is to screw around with other people on Myspace. My other son just deleted his account entirely because of this & other issues.

As for Scotswoman....haven't any of you heard the old saying?
Don't wrestle with the pig.......you both get dirty .......and the pig likes it.

Scotwwoman:
What a rude fool!
If you don't like Facebook or Myspace, stay off them.
NOW, why are YOU wasting space showing-off your ignorance and closed-mindedness?
FYI, I've come into contact with friends I would probably not have located outside of Facebook.
*IF* you know Facebook well enough to speak up against it, it's obvious you've already used up a bunch of time cruising it (didn't YOU have anything better to do with your time?) If you DON'T, then you're simply guessing...an ignorant proposition at best.
How can you possibly judge what others get from a website? From what I read in your rants and raves, you simply are not bright enough to figure the site out. So leave us who like it to our own devices while you live in your glum little part of the world.
Why are you so bitter towards people who DO have friends? Be nice and you may gain some friends of your own.
Your jealousy is amazing! I guess somebody with your attitudes NEVER found your soulmate...somebody who would put up with you.
Oh, well. I think I'll go chat with GOOD FRIENDS on Facebook and leave you and your bitterness alone to sort things out...

Most everyone has addressed this comment very well in my opinion. I just want to add my own two cents so to speak. The internet itself has been such a blessing in the lives of so many people that I personally know. As a home health care aide I see many many disabled as well as the elderly that have had so much joy brought into their lives by being able to interact socially with others. All too often it isn't a matter of the lack of social skills that draw folks to places like Facebook and MySpace as well as others, it is a physical disability. As a matter of fact, I know three people in particular who have enjoyed a far richer life than once thought possible through these applications, they are all three mutes. Through the internet they have been able to "speak" to others and share their lives with others. For me personally I will be 50 years old this August, but if I'm older than you then it only means I was here first. I will continue to socialize on both Facebook and MySpace for as long as they are here to do so and I will advocate them to others (like those mentioned above) so that they too may enjoy to riches and the rewards of other human contact by whatever means it can be brought to them. A Tight Scotswoman = An Uninformed Scotswoman, but that's just my personal opinion. We should not be so close minded about things that either do not apply to us or that we simply do not understand.

Valerie,
It is obvious you did NOT read the entire first comment or subsequent comments.
There are 'some' people who are not disabled, and have NO health problems, are NOT confined to home, yet they are sitting in chat rooms night after night.
Whatever did they do BEFORE the Internet and computers?
Computers and the Internet are great 'tools' but they should not replace a normal social life and contact with real live persons.
In fact, most comments didn't even get the picture!

i think this is all boloney. I am an original user, and i think this is whole list is stupid. "poking" is just something fun and stupid, a way to be friendly and maybe in a flirting way. maybe i am just old fashioned with facebook, since i was on when it started, but who cares about the etiquette for it. it is just a way of keeping in touch with old friends. so everyone get over it and have some fun with it. geeze. and personally i think if you are over 30, you are too old for it and if you are under 18 you are too young. and i probably will get yelled at for that statement but thats the way i feel. can we please not forget the original intention of this site; a way for college students to get in touch with each other for classes.
