Man to Serve 21 Months for Illegally Recording Two Movies... Ouch!

A silly man is headed to jail after admitting he used a camcorder to illegally record two films in a Washington, DC movie theater.
According to authorities, Michael Logan (sentenced to 21 months for bootlegging both 'Enchanted' and '28 Weeks Later') was responsible for the premature release of over 100 movies between 2006 and 2008.
The harsh penalty is a result of US legislation approved in 2005 that labels cinema camcorder-ing a felony. Obviously, that's bad for Logan, but great for the MPAA(Motion Picture Association of America).
Movie theft costs the movie industry approximately $18 billion dollars annually. [source: news.com]

$18 BILLION dollars annually? Really? I wondere where they pulled that out of their asses from.
Maybe if they didnt release such shitty movies as of late they wouldve have lost so much money. I guess the movie industry forgot to factor that in.

Some things I agree with and some things I do not. This happens to be something that I do agree with. This is clearly wrong and should be punished for it. Copy protection is something I do not agree with simply because it does not work and you should be able to backup your movies. It is legal to back up your movies yet it is illegal to use software to break copy protection. They are not preventing illegal distribution and are only adding to the overall cost of production with the copy protection.

While I agree the guy should be punished, it should be strictly monetary! The guy isn't dangerous and doesn't belong behind bars. My tax dollars are paying to keep him behind bars! I only want my tax dollars paying to keep someone locked up who might try to hurt me!

Agree 100%! And after a year and 9 months in jail, he would come out as a jobless convicted felon, becoming yet another non-productive citizen not making an income and therefore not paying taxes and probably collecting welfare... Nobody wins here...
A VERY hefty monetary penalty makes much more sense.
I wonder what rationale and forces are behind classifying cinema camcorder-ing as a FELONY crime. It seems a bit vindictive... It would not be surprising if some law making politicians either have ties with or are being paid by MPAA...
