whenever we got on the one that's not yet crashed, baisically every time we clicked, a new ad popped up. it got really annoying
then one day my sis was on it and a window popped up saying our computer was infected and to turn it off immediately
so we havent touched it
what do we do with it now? is it save to turn it on to try to fix it?

I continue to get block ups which have CID in the front. My pop up blocker is on, I have anti viruse protection and my computer seems slower. I have had these problems since I got DSL. Any suggestions to get rid of CID:

I was a comcast customer for awhile and I received free anti-virus from McAfee. It was great I never had 1 problem with them. I was not aware that after I cancelled my comcast I no longer had McAfee. I received this pop-up from someone telling me my computer was infected with 51 types of virus', trojans and malware. I could not do anything. After a little while fumbling around in my computer, ( I am not even a little techie ) I got frusterated and found my way to Microsoft and down-loaded CareOne. My computer is fine, it cost me nothing and I get to try it for 6 mos.

If you do not know how to properly operate your choice of security systems then let a professional take care of it for you, so you can hold them liable if anything goes wrong.
IMO, Norton and McAffe are worthless.
Windows Firewall is also worthless.
I use SpyBot Search & Destroy along with AdAware (made by Lavasoft) and have not had any problems at all for the past 8 years.
Recently installed the programs on a family members computer and found over 1000 infections of data miners, trojans and other crap infecting the computer even while they were running Windows Firewall and Norton together for so called protection.

No kidding! My daughter was tricked into buying one of these anti-virus program call "antivirus2008". It first hijack your computer, then trick you into buying their program and then your computer is render useless. And that's just the beginning, soon after somebody obtained her credit card number and tried to help themselve to $1800. The government and every nations have to set some kind of law to stop these kind of criminal act.

I KEEP TRYING TO REPLY TO ALL OF YOU, BUT APPARENTLY ITS NOT GOING THRU. TRYING ONE MORE TIME. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND I HAVE TRIED MOST OF THEM EXCEPT THE RESTORE THING BECAUSE I HAD DONE THAT JUST THE OTHER DAY AND IT DIDNT HELP THEN. I REALLY THINK ITS ON AOL AND NOT MY COMPUTER SINCE EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN FOUND WAS NOT IT....DID FIND SOMETHING IN THE REGISTRY CALLED HKLM THAT MY SCANNER WANTS TO DELETE. ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT?
