For some reason, I immediatly thought it was just a hole in the canvas...but maybe that's just the skeptic in me talking.

I think the illusion is whether the seated figure is staring at a painting on an easel or out an open window. The light on the figure looks like the moon is shining through a window. The shadows and the object on the left make it appear that there is space behind the moonlight vista.

Actually, he's looking at dirty glass and what appears to be the moon is actually a perfectly round hole in the dirty glass which shows that it's light outside. The fact that the figure is dressed in his bedclothes is part of the deception.

No. Click the link given and it will give you an explanation on how the size of the moon affects how large buildings on the horizon look. It has nothing to do with it being a window rather than a large wall painting or the deception of night and day.
