I grew up there during the 50's (the beat group) and during the 60's... and I must say it was a very interesting place and time. Oh and how I do remember so many folks had those VW buses... then I moved back to the mid-west, and yes they had/have them, too. I can remember walking through UC Berkeley's campus and arguring with the likes of Jerry Rubin and the sit in at Sproul Hall and the fountain that was later called Ludwuz's after a dog who used to play in it. I also remember Larry Blake's joint where you could get the best salad I have ever eaten and Sid's for burgers, too... not to mention all of the coffee houses and book stores. I am so glad I was able to experince that time and place. After high school I even audited some classes at UC Berkeley before leaving for Mizzou.

Cheryl

Comments on

Are you sure the dog only PLAYED in that fountain, and did not PISS in it? In spite of the Dennis's, mine will come with my ready and waiting beads, tie dyed curtains and pillows, incense holders, and stereo to play my music. This is just a pandering to Boomer nostalgia...VW makes very attractive and efficient vans overseas that aren't flashy enough for the American market. Anyone remember the Vanagon and Eurovan? Those were people-carriers in every sense, but didn't come with leather seats and sofa-soft suspensions like American vans and SUVs.

A.J.D

Comments on

awesome...yeah!!!
can't wait!
gotta love the microbus....

laurie

Comments on

oh, how sad. old hippy baby boomers coming out of the woodwork...doing lame name and place drops from the 60's. unlike you baby boomers i've had vw's my whole life and because they offered german handling and performance and technology like the tdi, while giving good mileage at a low cost. these are the only reasons to own a vw. if you buy a vehicle to remind you of your youth or to feel good about yourself....you got some real issues to deal with. sorry to be so blunt.

jhb

Comments on

Hey jhb,

Not all people who were young in the 60's are reliving the good old days in the present tense absentmindedly. Those were some of the best times of my life and if you are not old enough to remember, then you aren't old enough to remember. Okay, okay just let us pucker our lips for a few moments and pull some air in to reminisce. In 1969 we drove a red VW bus from Dallas, Texas to Los Angeles and back again. It was a great time and the bus didn't let us down. Hmmmm...but of course, since there were at least 12 of us in the bus (I lost count along the way) we were all so friendly back then and like helping fellow hippie travelers hitchhiking, that we didn't move very fast down the highway. Since there was so much smoke in the bus it was hard to do a Head count of just how many of us arrived in LA. Oh, where is my old Cheech and Chong VHS movie... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Bailey

Comments on

VW made great cars back then. I used to own a hatchback, the 412, the mini-station wagon, a karmaguia, which looked similar to my Volvo P1800S, and sometime drove my friend's beetle. I got and shared lots of fun out of each and every one of these vehicles. I hope they do bring back the microbus. The creator of the engine and chassis platform that eventually became Volkswagon was Dr Ferdinand Porche...... the damned bettle ALWAYS had a Porche engine in it!
