2. Have a plan, and get it down on paper.


We know that you aren't a professional, but a little planning before you pick up the camera can only help. Have a general idea of what you want in the footage, write it down on a piece of paper (or even storyboard it, like the big directors do). Trust us, it will save you when you start to edit.

For example, if you are going on a hike, know that you are probably going to see the following: trees, rivers, your family and animals. When you think of your complete video, you are going to want all of those things. Don't think you need to have the camera on your family the entire time. You don't. Get a bit of everything.
