Airlines Won't Block 'Porn' on In-Flight Internet Access
At long last, Internet access is finally becoming consistently available on flights around the country (and the world). While most technophiles like us are completely jazzed at the prospect of surfing while jet-setting, other folks aren't so sure. As you can see from the above video, many parents and other porn-averse folks are concerned that mile-high-Wi-Fi will just open the door to some shady fliers surfing illicit porn sites as they cross the country. They might be right -- US Air is indicating it won't filter 'Net access, but will instead rely on its stewardesses to maintain the peace and handle any complaints.
This, too, has people up in arms, particularly the stewardesses who say they already have enough to do without having to worry about looking for smut (it sure is a long way from the days of 'Coffee, Tea, or Me.'). But we're inclined to think this is being blown way out of proportion. People have been watching R-rated DVDs and videos on laptops mid-flight for years now and we haven't exactly heard a flood of complaints yet.
What do you think? Should in-flight Internet be censored? [From: CNN]

It seems to me that this may be being blown out of porportion. Do you really believe that the individuals who are going to surf pornography while flying don't OWN pornographic movies that they could have brought with them to watch all this time? I haven't heard of any issues thus far. As a parent of two I also am curious about those of you who seem to think it is the airlines job to parent MY children!!! It is my responsibility to be aware of what is going on around my kids and to protect them to the best of my ability. I hate to be the one to point it out..........but people your kids could be exposed to inappropriate material anywhere!!!! So are your kids banned from the computer altogether? The TV? Movies? Going to friends houses? They have more of a risk in these venues then they do on an airplane!!!

Queston?? Airlines won't let short skirts - low cut blouses but
it's fine to watch a little smut. Hmmm please explain the logic.

I suppose you can't interject your morals on somebody else where what they watch is censored....BUT I do believe if you have children that you do not want exposed to this filth then the Stew's are going to have to reseat them in the event the seat partner is watching this stuff....That is unforunate for already busy stew's but cannot be helped...I don't see porn becoming a huge problem aboard the airplane...Wi-Fi aboard a plane isn't going to be free and the cost could prohibit porn becoming a main problem...business people can't put such viewing on their expense account....

".....This, too, has people up in arms, particularly the stewardesses who say they already have enough to do..."
REALLY? I will admit that serving those nasty meals can be quite tiresome but as often as I fly, I rarely see the flight attendents unless I go back to the galley.
Of course, they probably busy collecting all of the dollar bills for extra's like: blankets, headsets, pillows, food, drink....

What one want's to do, one does. Change is coming and nobody said for the better. You'd best stop trying to push the leftist liberals around from now on. I concede we can sometimes be arrogant punks but we're going to have the POWER!! We'll allow everything but christianity. It's all about rights.

I thought this was going to be a privilege, not a right, provided by the airline for flying thier airline. Now people are screaming about thier rights to watch whatever they want via the internet! The airline should block offensive internet content and those who choose to use the internet onboard LIKE WHAT YOU GET. If you are a business person looking to get some work done...do whatever work you can and finish the rest of it when you get off the plane. It's something you didn't get to do before so you should just be grateful for what you get. Most of you complaining about watching what you want sound like the type of people who recieve a gift from someone and then complain to the giver about what you get!

"How do you think you and your children got here in the first place? Immaculate conception? You could just teach your children that sex is a part of life...or not to invade other peoples personal space and privacy...
*Most* people will use their better judgement and know that isn't the time or the place to be looking at that kind of stuff.
I am a 27 y/o female, and so help me god the next time I'm stuck sitting next to the crying and/or obnoxious kid. I swear I will find some animal porn or bondage stuff and turn the volume up as loud as it can get on my altec speakers..."
So i should just tell my 3 year old about sex bc you say so bc you hate kids with strong personalities.... Dont think so...or I should just deal with it. How bout I light up while you look at porn or sing Jesus loves me. Dont impose your personal life upon me and I wont impose mine on you.
And do us all a favor and dont have kids. Sounds like you have serious issues!
God Bless You :-)

Yes, oh yes! Unfiltered access to viewing ANY internet site is finally available and should be.

What's a stewardess? Who the heck wrote the article and how old is it/the author?
What an idiotic idea to allow anyone to watch porn on their laptop while on a commercial flight! Next will be speakerphones to 1-900 numbers and sticky seats. Just a plain stupid idea.

You know 10 years ago I would have read this, shaken my head and moved on. Now, however, I am like RobThomas13---shocked that you are sincere about the venom you spew. It is called Free Speech and there is a reason our Founding Fathers risked life and limb to aquire it for themselves and the generations that would follow after them. Let's talk about the problems with mass censorship. First, what is your definition of Porn because if you define it in terms of naked people you are going to run into some serious problems because National Geographic and much of the Art created by the Masters (think Venus Botticellie and Michael Angelo's David) would be prohibited. I guess we could just watch cartoons. Oh, wait, surely movies like 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit" would be banned because of sexy portrail of Jessica Rabbit. Okay then, just the classics

Todd....too funny...we'd be happy to do whatever we can on the plane to accomodate our passengers....

If viewing adult material on a plane were illegal, then why does the magazine shop inside security sell porn mags? The fact that they've sold these magazines for decades and I have not heard of someone looking at one on a plane leads me to believe that no one would intentionally view porn sites on a plane. Yes, there will probably be a couple of people who will do it. But filters are not infallible - they block non-porn sites and they let others through. How about letting people use their judgement on what is appropriate behaviour?

Flight attendants to stock paper towels and lube? Are you kidding me? All that lube would end up in our bags for the layover...hello!

A few people have mentioned it, but most of you guys are missing the mark. First of all, we're not talking about flights to China, these domestic flights are only a few hours long. If you need to look at porn so often that you indulge yourself while on a two hour flight, you should reconsider and take a car instead.
Second, I agree that some Americans tend to overreact to nudity. But nudity and pornography AREN'T the same thing. Why do people watch porn? To get off. Most smut magazines serve to "please the eye," while the specific intent of porn is to induce some sort of sexual stimulation. Hence the difference between magazines and pornography. (I highly doubt anyone watches porn "out of boredom," or "just for fun.")
I don't think anybody, children or adults, should be forced to put up with some perv masturbating on the plane. That kind of behavior may seem appropriate if you're a 14 year old boy, but anybody with a life would know better. A guy in my town got arrested for masturbating in his car outside a Dunkin' Donuts. Sure, people could have ignored it, but someone with such low impulse control could be considered dangerous.
Even though airlines can't fully ban porn on flights, passengers definitely have the right to inform the flight attendant if the person next to them is making them feel uncomfortable. People are starting to take "instant gratification" too far.

I travel a lot and it would be great to have internet access on flights. It's even better on long flights in first or business class but unfortunately I don't get those too often. Anyway, at times where I was able to take advantage of the internet, I'd be totally fine with them blocking porn sites and even gaming (the real money kind) if desired. I use gaming sites sometimes but would consider that to be their choice to block. As long as I could reach my email, do work related research, read news, etc. it would be worth it to me.
As for people viewing porn on board I too think it's inappropriate. It's fine if you choose to view porn but on a plane you'd be choosing for others to view it. I was in first class one time and the guy accross the aisle and one row up was "reading" a Playboy. I was a little shocked (no, I'm not a prude) and felt a little weird. It made me uncomfortable looking at him, walking by him, using the restroom after him, etc. If people can't police themselves with some common manners then I guess we have to force it on them.
