Don't let your computer's built-in computer tools get out-of-date.

Mistake: You did the right thing by getting some antivirus and spyware protection. The problem is, you never update it, you let your subscription run out, or you never run it.

Solution: Make sure that your program is set to automatically retrieve updates and scan your computer constantly. In 2008, malware was three times as prevalent as it was in 2007 on the 'Net, so make sure you're always up to date. If you're not sure, go and check when your last update happened. Either you've got the wrong settings, your software is messed up, or you need to renew your subscription.
