12 Things You Should Never Do Online 6

Mistake: Like spam emails, pop-ups – those little Web windows that open up automatically alongside your browser -- are either trying to sell you crap or trying to pass as something legit. You should know that. The problem is, people still click on them, even if they think they're saying "no" to a special offer.
Solution: Hit the X in the upper right hand corner (or the red button on the left-hand side on a Mac), making sure that it's the X of your browser window and not one in the ad. Even if it says "close this window," clicking on it leaves your computer susceptible to infection. Be sure to enable the pop-up blocker on your browser -- all browsers nowadays come with one.
