Don't buy from unfamiliar sites.

Mistake: Say a Web site you've never heard of has great deals on stuff you want. You think you've found the bargain of a lifetime. The problem is, you have no idea who you're dealing with.

Solution: Since you're giving them personal and financial information, you should at least make sure you're sending the info over a secure connection. 'Consumer Reports' recommends having a separate credit card solely for online shopping, so you can review your purchases and protect against fraud.
