With Photoshop a Click Away, Can Photography Be Trusted?

Newsweek spoke with highly regarded photojournalist John Long, who said: "With technology, you can make the moment anything you want it to be. Our credibility has been stretched in so many ways, so I don't think the public has a great deal of faith in us." It's hard to argue that point, with tales of the so-called Montauk Monster being picked up by major news sites everywhere. The supposed beast was spotted on a Long Island beach earlier in the month, photographed by a sun-seeker, then posted online by gossip portal Gawker. From there it was picked up by the big news sites and got plenty of TV time. Many speculated it was a dog carcass, others that it was something totally new. Now a movie director has said it was just a prop from his movie and that this is all a viral marketing campaign, though that's a claim that many believe is itself a hoax.
We've also got those UFOs that popped up all over the newswires last year, but seemingly nowhere in the real world. We've also seen a growing trend of digital slicing and dicing of celebrities, most recently Mariah Carey, but no shortage of predecessors, making this a trend that's not going away anytime soon.
So, the question is: do you trust news photographs any longer? [Source: Newsweek]

Believe not what you hear, only half of what you see, and if you haven't proved it yourself to be true, then you can only believe in the Lord Jesus. It's only reasonable to think that something never before seen in the quarter to a century of most of our lives doesn't exist. The unexplored territories which has remained unexplored through the thousands of years of earth's history will probably remain that way. Why should it's secrets all of a sudden start to appear. Publicity is not only for the glory seekers, but, for the fortune seekers as well. Believe what you've proven to be true, for everthing you hear from the media is for entertainment, so enjoy the media with a less alarming nature.

Re my comment claiming this was a turtle....I now think I am wrong....I got careless and forgot about the way the shell is attached to a turtle body.
The view of the head is not very clear. It seems to have the right shape for a turtle or tortoise. Not sure if those are teeth.
Could it be a turtle that somehow never had a shell?

question:
WHERE exactly did this thing disapear to?? It's not like someone just snapped a photo and then it disintegrated, so where is it? Wouldn't examining the actual creature- or whatever it is- solve the problem??

Well folks, in a closer examination using a magnifying glass on the existing pic on the net, I observed what would seem to be an ear and in the neck region it appears to be a piece of metal protruding there. Metal say fake an ear say real, I haven't proved if it's real or fake, so the only way to be sure is hands on examination.

This issue must be taken seriously. As technology advances, we will be able to reconstruct history by altering photos og historic events. If there's no one still alive who was alive when the event happened, how will anyone know whether the photo is accurate or has bveen modified. Its scary.

The tapir in the San Francisco Zoo (CA) was missing quite awhile -- at first zoo visitors thought he was soaking underwater in his pool.
While hiking in McKean County, PA, not a long time ago an amazing sight near one of the old folks' home was a variety of stunned and slain creatures lying along the edges of the roadway, an egg bumped from a nest, and many dazed and confused humans wondering at the carnage that was so unusual. The only creature nearby that was mobile and alert to the situation was a chipmunk, apart from some crows scouting out a drowning.
