With Photoshop a Click Away, Can Photography Be Trusted?

Newsweek spoke with highly regarded photojournalist John Long, who said: "With technology, you can make the moment anything you want it to be. Our credibility has been stretched in so many ways, so I don't think the public has a great deal of faith in us." It's hard to argue that point, with tales of the so-called Montauk Monster being picked up by major news sites everywhere. The supposed beast was spotted on a Long Island beach earlier in the month, photographed by a sun-seeker, then posted online by gossip portal Gawker. From there it was picked up by the big news sites and got plenty of TV time. Many speculated it was a dog carcass, others that it was something totally new. Now a movie director has said it was just a prop from his movie and that this is all a viral marketing campaign, though that's a claim that many believe is itself a hoax.
We've also got those UFOs that popped up all over the newswires last year, but seemingly nowhere in the real world. We've also seen a growing trend of digital slicing and dicing of celebrities, most recently Mariah Carey, but no shortage of predecessors, making this a trend that's not going away anytime soon.
So, the question is: do you trust news photographs any longer? [Source: Newsweek]

is it just me or does anyone else see the strap looking thing around its arm......like it was some crazed monster that needed to be bound to stop it from killing someone lol....i dunno it seems feasible to me that it could be a movie prop or photoshop. hell it could be real but dont you think someone would have seen something like this walking around lol

My fave hockey team started posting headshots of the players on their site, and as new players came in, they simply photoshopped the new heads onto an old body. Some of them looked pretty wacky. If people are using photoshop for something like this, it is getting out of control. What can we trust anymore?

It is just a turtle without its shell. Just look at the beak and head shape, and feet.
You are blowing this way out of proportion, with all these wild guesses.
larry johnsonAug 24th 2008 3:39PM
turtles dont have teeth
KittenAug 24th 2008 3:52PM
Turtles also have scales and their shells are attached to their bodies by their spine and ribcage. If this were a turtle missing its shell, you wouldn't see any skin on the back, but you would be able to see all its insides.
Ken C.Aug 24th 2008 6:47PM
Pssssst...turtles don't have teeth.
adamk617Aug 25th 2008 6:32PM
This is REAL LIFE, not LOONEY TOONS. Turtles can NOT come out of their shells like that. Pull the shell off a turtle and you'll see its' entrails. Their shell is their body; their appendages are attached via muscles and tendons inside.
DR. BagwellAug 25th 2008 3:05PM
How dumb do you have to be. If it was a stupid turtle with no shell then the back would be open and exposed, and it would look mangled since a turtle's shell is conected to it. A turtle's body doesn't just slide in.
LisaAug 25th 2008 11:00PM
it's a sea turtle with no shell, they have teeth when they are that big, called snapping turtles
FlameonAug 24th 2008 3:18PM
Wake up people It's Lindsay Lohan passed out on the beach !!!

Does every one forget that the experemental station at Plum Island is
still active. Who knows what could possibly come from there, although Uncle would never admit it.

Don't ya just Love a Hoax, First it's this crazy Monster washing up on the beach and then The Bigfoot Hoax, is America that bored with themselves.
This M.Monster if so a movie prop, nice one and can't wait to see the so called movie. But the Bigfoot hoax, Please what in begez where those 2 dumbster thinking. I am from the Northwest and grew up with that legend and always found it facinating and would love to see a REAL Bigfoot, But This M.Monster I thought for sure was the Real thing and still kinda not sure, was Jeff Corwin involved as I heard his comments to. I guess We will see but I bet this tale of the Monster will dimish away just like all the other Hoax's in times past.
TrayAug 25th 2008 12:09PM
i'm just waiting for that movie to come out...then we will know if it was really the prop..
ArianaAug 24th 2008 3:51PM
Obviously anyone claiming it's a turtle without a shell has never taken biology. A turtle is attached to its shell, and it's rather complicated.
A turtle shell can't just be removed, not are they born without them, as the poor thing would likely be killed and eaten before it could ever grow that big.
It's like it's a photoshopped image.
ColeAug 24th 2008 3:55PM
It can't be a turtle out of its shell, the spine of a turtle is connected to the shell, guess again.... This image is a good quality hoax, right next to the recently discovered big foot. Has anyone noticed that one of the Montauk Monster has a digit sticking out, as if it were flipping the finger?? This is one attribute that many people include in their hoax, for the chuckles and laughs of the person who created this image, to discretely show contempt to anyone who sees the image and actually thinks it is an actual photograph.......
