Apple to Release Software Upgrade to Fix Dropped Calls on iPhone 3G

Apparently, the issue stems from the coding on an Infineon chip in the phone. According to reports, the dropped calls happen when the iPhone switches from faster to slower wireless networks (for example, switching from an EDGE network to 3G), which disrupts 2 to 3% of traffic. Sure, it doesn't sound like much, but think about how much some iPhone owners use them and you can see why they're angry.
Blame for the problem went back and forth between Infineon, AT&T, and Apple, but hopefully this software solution will let users avoid a product recall. After September, we should know if we can scratch off at least one reason to not buy the 3G version. [From: BusinessWeek]

Ok lets read this story one more time, for all you people blaming it on the networks! It is a software issue, defective chip in the new ipones.... aka apple is to blame.

I absolutely love my iPhone. My husband and I got the first version a few weeks after its release and have not had any problems. When the 3G version came out, my husband upgraded, but I opted to keep my original. Neither of us have had any problems with service, getting reception in places like the Eastern Shore of MD, the Maine coast and the mountains in VA where others haven't had any. I wouldn't change anything about it.

I too was once with Cingular/ATT and had the worst service ever. I moved on to Verizon, but left when my contract was up. Not so much because of poor service, but I didn't much care for how they re-configure the software on the phones and limit what users can do. I am now with US Cellular and am completely satisfied. As for the IPhone....No Thanks. I use a Blackberry and wouldn't trade it for anything I've seen thus far.

It is not AT&T, I also have sprint service. AT&T has the best coverage, I can leave the country and still get my calls. Sprints drops my calls in the middle of town all the time. The problem is with the Iphones. Never had these problems with my razor but needed better net service. If you have a lot of dropped Iphone calls go to menu, then settings, then gerneral, then at bottom hit reset, then hit reset all settings and the problem will be fixed for a period of time. Got the Iphone on day 1 and have had to do this twice since. This will save you a great deal of time on hold with AT&T, who are no help and even more hold time with apple reps that are swamped with complaints and problems. Try this fix until they come up with software solution in Sept.

So I've had Verizon for about 4 years and had 1 dropped call over 4 years.
One.
I buy my dynamite new iPhone, and to save battery life, I turn off the 3G features until I want to use them. With the 3G features turned off I have had 12 dropped calls in 2 weeks! It seems that AT&T and Apple don't mix.
Personally, if they don't fix the issue I want to start a en masse lawsuit. It's just to good a device, and it is a reception issue. I've had dropped calls sitting in a City Park not moving. That was not an issue of traveling between cell towers, or moving from a 3G location to another (3G was turned off). So I throw this at AT&T...
If you can't hack being the sole provider for service on the iPhone, well... expect a nice FAT class-action lawsuit. I know I'm ready!
Seriously. I'm there right now.
