"Because when was the last time you absolutely, positively had to program your coffee maker to make coffee while, say, finishing up your workday at the office? Can't you just wait the extra five minutes and make the coffee when you get home?"

They're not saying it takes five minutes to get home. They're saying ONCE YOU GET HOME it takes five minutes to make coffee.
