Prison rape is no joke.

I don't know how our public discourse became coarsened enough so that an apparent majority seems to relish the prospect of prisoners being raped.

It's gotten so pervasive that even some public officials engage in such talk, potentially making it an 8th amendment violation. That is, if it is evident that the government is deliberately causing prisoners to be raped as a consciously chosen policy of punishment (rather than letting it happen as a result of under-staffing, over-crowding, or unwillingness to exert the harsh crackdown necessary to impose absolute order inside prisons), that's a pretty clear constitutional violation.
