Pineapple Express' Gary Cole Has Simple Tastes, and a Drum Kit

Gary Cole's been in a bazillion movies and TV shows and has played all kinda roles. Lately he's busied himself with the much-anticipated stoner comedy 'Pineapple Express', which opens this Wednesday nationwide. Though we remember him best as Katherine's creepy ex on 'Desperate Housewives', we just interviewed him about his gadget-usage and he seems like a really nice guy! He even gave his old drum kit to the kid next door! Cole is unpretentious about gadgetry, reserving his tech-splurges for HDTV and his latest drums. Read on for the deets.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

Just a phone, to take care of business and household-related things, but nothing more "tech-y" than an occasional DVD. I enjoy my quiet time while on set!

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I just got a new LG phone from Verizon. I love this one because it works, unlike my last one (an archaic Nokia), but at the end of the day it's just a phone – I have no romantic attachment to it.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I have never sent a text message before. At least, not on purpose. If I need to speak to someone, I'll call them.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

Teddi and I share an AOL e-mail account, but other than that I'm pretty old-fashioned and read the paper for my news and gossip!

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop?

The standard gripes – losing power, no reception, dropped calls. I literally just got this new phone so I have no complaints...yet.

Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop could do that it doesn't do now?

I find it hilarious at how easy it is to misplace or lose your cell phone, and I wish it had some sort of remote locater device other than having to call it with ANOTHER phone. Can anyone else see the irony in that? *Note to self: keep better track of your phone!!!

What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?

The anti-reality show ray gun???! When does that hit the streets??? Ha, I'm pretty complacent with my minimalist tendencies concerning emerging technologies and gadgets, but you never know what might catch my eye.

What's you're favorite gadget currently?

I have a Roland 10-Piece Electronic Drum Kit – 1 kick, 1 snare, 4 tom toms, 3 cymbals, and a high hat. The cool thing about it is that you can record yourself playing, you can play along w/ a CD, or bang on it solo, which is pretty boring if you suck like I do. I started drumming in my school band, at around age 12 or 13, and on through HS, but didn't pick it up again until my show 'Midnight Caller'. My wife, Teddi, who sang lead, and I started jamming with the showrunner and the first Ads. We called ourselves 'Bobby and the Bonemasters'. The old drum kit I had from those days, which I bought in San Fran, I gave to my neighbor's kid, who's getting really good!

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

Uh, that's obvious...my phone, so I can call someone to get me off of it!!! Wait, is the reception good on this island???

What's the most-played song or artist on your iPod?

Springsteen, hands down. I'm always listening to "Thunder Road Live!"

BlackBerry, Sidekick, or Treo?

None of the above, for reasons above.

Are you getting an iPhone?

Nope. I honestly don't need all that "convenience!" I'm good w/ my new LG.

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

Not to date myself, but...'Galaga', that 2-d classic arcade game where you shooting incoming aliens from your spaceship. The longest I've lasted on that was maybe 20mins; I sucked at it forever until a buddy showed me the right moves. The trick is to juke 'em out or fake one way and go the other when they descend on you!

Mac or PC?

We have both in my household. My daughter uses her Mac for its music and video capabilities and schoolwork, and my wife has a PC for everyday use.

What's the biggest lie you've read about yourself on the Web?

It's all true - isn't everything that's posted on the Internet the truth??? That's what I read on the Internet, anways...

What's the most embarrassing place your cell phone has gone off?

I fancy myself pretty good about that, but it did go off at a play reading once. Not good; I was "that guy!"

Do you have HDTV, and, if so, what are your favorite things to watch in HD?

Finally, tech that I get really excited about! Yes, I have a big ol' flat panel plasma in the living room and in the bedroom that I love to watch sports on, in particular the Chicago Cubs and NFL games. There's nothing like sports in HD!

Are you on Facebook, MySpace, or another online social network? If so, what's your favorite thing to do on Facebook/MySpace, etc?

I don't personally do any of that, but I've got a Web site that's fan-run, and they serve as my watchdog of sorts. They recently alerted me of a MySpace page someone created posing as me, and it sort of creeped me out, so they had it nixed. My daughter, Mary, who's a teenager, has a profile though, just like I'm sure every teen in America does today!
