Ashes of Star Trek's James Doohan Destroyed in Rocket Launch
Finely riding that razored edge between tragedy and comedy, the New York Times reports that not only did the SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket lose its three satellites and fail to reach orbit during a recent launch, but it also destroyed the remains of actor James Doohan, best known as the original 'Star Trek's' Chief Engineer "Scotty." The actor's ashes -- as well as those of over 200 others -- were being carried into orbit by the rocket when complications with the ship's stage separation led to the (assumed) destruction of the craft. This recent mishap puts a sad period on the end of the sentence that already included an earlier loss and eventual recovery of the remains. [Source: New York Times Via Slashdot]

SCOTTY. You will always have a special "space" in the hearts of many.. thanks for a terrifc show...
jaguignon @ Aug 5th 2008 2:31PM
The very fact that there were over 200 people's remains on that rocket and the fact that they probably paid an astronomical (no pun intended) price to get their ashes there, deserves a second shot to space! I wonder if they all had insurance taken out on the flight for them to insure that they actually get to space?!
Glenn55 @ Aug 5th 2008 3:40PM
guess he was on the wrong show. His final appearance would have been better in "Lost in Space"

I think that if anyone would have had a sense of humor about this sort of situation, it would have been Scotty. How many times did his character have to save the Enterprise from certain obliteration? He would have made some joke about them not having a Scottish engineer on the project or something. It's too bad that his ashes didn't make it out, but he was still up there, somewhere.

Hey, they tried. Now they need to return the money to the families for the service that didn't occur.

SWEET P @ Aug 5th 2008 3:21PM
O M G !!! WE HAVE HOMELESS AND STARVING DOWN HERE ON EARTH, IN THE GOOD OLD USA & SCOTLAND, TOO...lET THE POOR MAN REST AND GET DOWN TO SAVING EARTH FOR ETERNITY !!! HE REACHED HIS DESTINATION, BACK IN 2005--LET HIS REMAINS REMAIN IN PEACEFUL OUTER SPACE, OR WHEREVER THEY ARE
hurnda @ Aug 5th 2008 4:32PM
Your bleeding heart will only bring you to an early end! Go ahead give everything you have to the poor homeless people and do nothing to advance us to new ways of supporting ourselves. Don't you get it? You can keep giving and they'll keep taking. Eventually there's nothing to give! Read Atlas Shrugged.
Donna @ Aug 5th 2008 6:32PM
We will always have homeless and starving people. Do you know why? It is because they are used to getting handouts. It would be better to teach them a skill and do something like, ah, say...work!
richard @ Aug 5th 2008 3:33PM
Is it "Beam me up Scotty" or "Blow me up Scotty?"
Angiebaby @ Aug 5th 2008 3:38PM
It may not have been James Doohan's first choice, but having his ashes disintegrated and absorbed into the Earth's atmosphere would seem a suitable second choice for our Scotty.
Joe @ Aug 5th 2008 3:39PM
WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. WHO CARES?
sharon barclay @ Aug 5th 2008 4:38PM
I couldn't agree more. Why don't all of you have Scotty beam you up to a place where you can get a real life!!!!!!!
hurnda @ Aug 5th 2008 5:18PM
You wouldn't ever spend (or should I say Waste) money on anything just because it's adventurous or fun would you?! Too bad. Your life must be pretty dull!
Sterlin @ Aug 5th 2008 4:04PM
once again, somebody has their facts screwed up (imagine that, the media doesn't know what their talking about). the rocket that took "scotty" up was supposed to come down, and it did, just about where they thought it would. the ashes of 202 people were in metal cylinders and were found were the rocket landed. the cylinders will be mounted on plaques commemorating their flight and given back to their respective families. who ever wrote this is a retard.
