Toyota Targets Segway with Winglet Personal Transportation

Like the Segway, the user controls the Winglet by shifting his weight to move the transporter forward and back or to make tight turns. Winglet will begin consumer testing at the Central Japan International Airport near Nagoya and Laguna Gamagori resort this Autumn with further testing in more crowded environments planned for 2009. It's planned to hit a production stride in 2010.
Hey Toyota, here's a hint: you'd better start lobbying for sidewalk legalization ASAP if you're hoping for global success. All three pictured after the break in order of S, M, and Large.
Update: Video added after the break to show just how nimble the handle-less S and M versions can be. [Source: Toyota Via Akihabara News]

I understand if it's for someone who has trouble walking, this is fantastic for them. But for those of us who have legs that work for us,we should really be grateful for them and take advantage..by using them. I think that's the reason we had them in the first place. We didn't have these 500 years ago,we didn't have them maybe what..10 years ago? And the human race has got along fine without them.

Yea let's help America get a little more lazy!!!!

Wow, I work with seniors. This is a fantastic idea. There are a lot of people with knee problems that could get around so much easier on one of these. They'll need to make a 4- or 3-wheeler for the older crowd. Hope I get to see some soon!!

This is for BRAD ! What kind of pervert are you? Who cares about Paris Hilton's sex tape. Stick with the issue being discussed. Are you getting commission on the tape or are you just a sex maniac.

I wonder how many people who said people need to walk more and are lazy are actually talking about themselves?
RichardAug 3rd 2008 1:09AM
When you get it produced and marketed...then talk about it.
Will it be like the Prius---no one has one for sale, only pictures, and there is a long waiting list going into next year?

This looks like it'll clutter your trunk on the way to the mall, which is the only place this thing would have any use. Besides, the wife could not get her shopping items in the trunk with this "thing" in there too.

I CAN'T STAND PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE A WEIGHT ISSUE OUT OF EVERYTHING.
I WILL TELL YOU ALL SOMETHING NOT EVERYONE THAT IS HEAVY IS LAZY THEY MIGHT HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION YOU DON'T KNOW SO HERE IS SOME GOOD ADVISE IT'S BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND LET PEOPLE THINK YOUR STUPID THAN TO OPEN IT AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT.......

I'm confuse, what are these things is good for except cousing lower back trouble. The large one looks like you have more control, but where would someone use it ?
KatieAug 6th 2008 7:59PM
At first glance at the segways, I thought that maybe they'd be a good invention to possibly go to and from work in [given that work is close to home.] However, upon looking up the speed of these things, they really only go about 6mph. Can we say scooter with a motor? Remember the razor scooters every kid wanted?? I'd say this is a version of that-with a motor. Perhaps if they were faster, they'd be useful at some things, but with their low speed, what use are they? We are a fat nation, and using one of these things to 'take a stroll' next door isn't helping! We need to WALK and EXERCISE more! Bicycles can go faster than these things, and get you to where you need to be faster and you burn more calories! What a toy for the rich who need to use one of these things to go from room-to-room in their million dollar mansions! Absolutely ridiculous.

As I forgot to add, these would however be useful for the handicapped for getting around. Those with limited mobility could use these to better their balance, and get around easier than with a wheelchair. I'm all for these for a good use-such as I just stated. But for people who CAN walk and without handicapped, you need to walk.
