Five Worst Game-to-Movie Translations

'DOOM' (2005)
This was just a bad idea from the get-go. As a game, 'DOOM' really had no story to begin with -- shooting demonic monsters does not a narrative make -- and trying to turn it into a full-length movie was pretty much a hopeless endeavor. Unsurprisingly, it goes for the shlocky, brainless shoot-em-up thing, but just sorta falls flat (despite a decent cast including The Rock, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike). There is a moment worth watching, however: Towards the end of the film, the camera takes on the classic first person perspective of the game, and hurls you through its extended action sequence climax. So you can pretty much just fast-forward to that part.

I don't know about anyone else, but actually love the resident evil movies, especially the second one.

Dear writer of this article you should really do your research better!
Who ever wrote is article is a none gamer first of all. First of all, Game movies in the 80's and 90's were low budget thus the quality sucked yet they remained true to the story. If you want drama or a long dialog go see a flick from Oprah's list. Game movies should stick to the Original story. Writers like you are the reason for bad comic and game movies. Second of all from 2000's to now there has increase budget which has made a vast difference in quality.
Each of the 5 movies you'd listed you missed the plot greatly.
5. Doom was a first shooter game, plot kill all monster from hell. Goal met
4. Street Fighters what can we say cold war middle east view some some fighting from the streets of NY, a classic 1980's view from a 80's game. true to the story line.
3. Mario Bros Movie, Yes the story is a bit different because it's Luigi's story for Princess Daisy, Not Mario and Princess Peach story. The writer of this article is brain dead and has probably never played a Mario Bros game.
2. House of the Dead horrible game story movie true to game. You can't make oranges in to apple no matter how hard you try. In the game you are trying to find out how everything started while staying alive.
1. Resident Evil one of best of all the game movies, there where originally many labs in the world, much like there are in real life, there where different versions of the virus that escaped which is what the game is about. The movies focus on the version of the virus which leaked out of the Hive some where in California. There are 18 games in total in the Resident Evil series.
Dear Writer.
You want to write a real story write how the Spiderman, The Hulk, X-men, Electra, Ironman, Aeon Flux, Dare Devil, Fantastic Four, Cat Woman, Speed Racer, and Punisher didn't stick to the story of the original writers and tried to cover it's mistakes with flash effects and big names. They failed at casting and staying true to the story.
lspiderl @ Jul 27th 2008 5:25PM
x7kitty im with you 100% ...... on all but streetfighter
in sptite of an amazing performance by raul julia the movie was a horrible mockery of the game they changes almost every charicters background story and butched the fighting moves and scenes
ken twirling like a ballerina pointlessly after uppercuting some guy anyone?
yeah streetfigther DEFINATELY belongs on this list but tis about the only one ...well maybie doom but even then doom was nearly as bad as this writer makes it out to be
and to the person that mentioned double dragon what more could you have wanted from a double dragon movie man ? it was well acted and very true to form and overall entertaining
jeff @ Jul 26th 2008 1:46PM
you got that right on the head good job
Nick @ Jul 26th 2008 3:26PM
Being the fact that they Doom has little storyline, what they did come up with was pretty good in the end it was just a movie that was fun to watch. Everyone comes into these things expecting something like the Dark Knight. Take it for what it is and get over it. It was a decent movie and i guarantee half the people that actually read this column bought the movie cuz they thought the same. Get over it emo kid.
Aly @ Jul 26th 2008 1:12PM
ok DOOM wasnt all that great. but amusing. as for resident evil i love the movies. so :-P
dyzrel @ Jul 26th 2008 7:10PM
whoever wrote this guide should be fired. resident evil is an amazing film adaptation of a game
dave @ Jul 26th 2008 7:11PM
wow this guide is horrible. resident evil (1) is easily the best video game movie ive ever seen. you are a tool.
B @ Jul 27th 2008 12:52AM
Silent Hill was actually pretty good. At least Gans tried to stay true to the source material.
www.obvenomspot.com @ Jul 27th 2008 1:58AM
ok, i didn't really like how the script writers were tryna make everyone in the resident evil movies be so badass, it was kinda over-the-top-uness to me. non-theless i like them alot
and DOOM was a great movie. Although the storyline wasn't true to the games, it was still good. and to prove that DOOm was a great movie i'll give you all a little scientific formula.
FORMULA: Karl Urban and The Rock+Monsters in an appropiate dark setting+First Person perspective sequence+The BFG!!!!!= GREAT MOVIE
and think about this. If the mario movie had the BFG, even randomly in the movie, the movie would have been better. I mean mario weilding a BFG, classic. same as the street fighter and house of the dead movies.
The BFG is awesome, thats all i'm staying
SeniorCyclops @ Jul 27th 2008 2:40AM
Anyone else like the first Mortal Kombat movie? I thought that was the best video game to movie adaption I've seen. The second one sucked though.
halo @ Jul 27th 2008 3:25AM
Apologies for the extensive post
wow, ok Evan Shamoo,
let me just grasp thought that you really and absolutely had no idea as to what you writing about in your articles of meaningless criticism. were you smoking or drinking or even been rejected by a female co-worker at the time you wrote this false article? seeing how you completely missed the point in each and every one of those movies which makes your article unintelligible and pointless.
For starters who are you to say that the movie doom does not stay true to the game or had no story to begin with? Have you even played it since the beginning from the very first one? unless you played the game you need to be sure you know what your talking about. because it in fact did have a story line which you obviously failed learn about it before writing garbage of an article. Secondly if you were only alloted 2 hours if that, to write a story on a series of games, you would pretty much have to cut sections to fit it in the story. which the backbone of the story was, man goes to moon which they did, and then something terrible happens, which it did, then there are demons trying to make there way to earth which was stated in the movie and they were the only ones left to prevent it, which is what your purpose was in the game. Maybe just maybe if you picked up a copy of the Doom 3 you would of known all that before writing this ridiculously poor article. Oh by the way, the first person perspective was supposed to be the highlight of the movie because that is wat the game is, IT IS A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER, wow how could you have not seen that coming from a first person perspective game, hmmmm that was a no brainier there Evan, and yet you mock the movie lol that is just pitiful.
Again get your facts straight before you misinterpret the concept to others that know the game with false information. As with the rest of the movies you trashed. my only advice is play the game before opening your mouth. only thing i think they could of done a better job on was the dialog seemed some what cheesy and maybe the actors them selves may have not been right for part. who knows and who cares it was still a decent movie. and don't even get me started on RE, because you are obviously putting out bad reviews because you never played the game and every one here seems to think so.
WHICH MEANS FIND A NEW JOB.
Because your reviews aren't even true to the games them selves either. And when the quake movie comes out think about what your going to say, because i shred another one of your articles apart with the correct information.
anyway have a nice day =)
NuyoRican90 @ Jul 27th 2008 7:54AM
Evan Shamoon,
What in the hell are you talking about? This is obviously the most ignorant and false article I've read all year. You obviously don't play the games. Oh my god, I'm so disgusted. Don't even down talk Doom. Do goals were met in the game Doom to the movies. You don't play games so you shouldn't be writing such crappy articles. I bet you had never play Doom before. And Resident Evil? Wow. Straight stupid. Don't even go there. Mario and Luigi.. hmm.. sure that movie was a little different from the game but that was Luigi and Princess Daisy and not Mario and Princess Peach which you should know about since you think you know everything about from game to movie. Resident Evil one of best of all the game movies, there were originally many labs in the world, much like the ones in real life, there where different versions of the virus that escaped which is what the game is about. The movies focuses on the version of the virus which leaked out of the Hive some where in California. So learn your stuff smart guy. I'm surprised you didn't say anything about FINAL FANTASY because then you would seriously be really stupid. Street Fighter was true to the story line. But you wouldn't know that because you never played the game. You want to write a real story? Then write how the Spiderman, The Hulk, X-men, Electra, Ironman, Aeon Flux, Dare Devil, Fantastic Four, Cat Woman, Speed Racer, and Punisher. They didn't stick to the story of the original writers and tried to cover it's mistakes with flash effects and big names. They failed at casting and staying true to the story. Anyways I know don't know who pissed you off or what happened to you but don't write articles that you are unsure about. Look into it.. right now you should quit your job and go play in traffic.. Bad games to movie my ass...
