Worst Game-to-Movie Translations 5

'House of the Dead' (2003)
Of course, no "worst of" list would be complete without at least one mention of C-movie superstar Uwe Boll. And while the list is remarkably long ('Alone in the Dark,' 'BloodRayne,' and 'Postal' are just a few of his travesties), 'House of the Dead' really takes the cake. Essentially telling the story of a group of teenagers trying to reach an island where a rave is going down -- only to get there and realize that zombies have attacked the rave and killed everyone -- the movie essentially takes a genre known and loved for its shlockiness somehow actually manages to go overboard. It currently holds a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is really not very good at all.

Does this mean that Tron is a good movie? ...becuase I can't tell. I've seen several of these lists rating the worst videogame-into-movie adaptations, and nobody includes Tron.

Ok. ARE YOU CRAZY? Video games have always been marketed to a younger gerneration. If you are too old and cranky to appreciate them then why are you writing about them. This negative bias is really immature. What is your problem? How can you say that the Mario Brothers movie is bad. I remember I saw it when I was 10 for the first time and I thought it was great. Resident Evil? You have to be a fan of the game I guess, have you ever even played it? If so I would bet it was for like an hour and you gave up because you lack the hand-eye cooridination. Maybe you are still just getting used to having opposable thumbs?

Uh, the Resident Evil movie's problem was that it was NOTHING like the games...also, one of the big bad monsters of the original game was suddenly in a Beauty & the Beast romance with the main character in one of the movies. Resident Evil mostly sucked becasue it was Tomb Raider with Zombies, not Resident Evil.
And your right, kids loved Mario Bros. the movie. I remember having the luigi action figure as a kid. But honestly, it was bad. Kids like crap. I remember having Aliens action figures as well and as a kid I didn't understand how racist the Apone action figure was or how much of a mistake it was to market toys about aliens that symbolze violent rape and murder.

The guy who wrote this is an idiot. 3/5 of these movies were decent and only 1 was really bad. He obviously isn't a gamer and it's obviously a slow day in the office.

tomJul 26th 2008 4:56PM

JJul 26th 2008 3:07PM
Okay. I think that you are insane. They only one in this list that was kinda shitty was Doom. And to be honest. I didn't think it was all that bad, I didn't like the first person vision in it, but everything else was good. and I love Dwayne Johnson. But you if you think they are the worst movie games and so be it. I will still support them. Ha.

Mortal Kombat was horrible!
JessJul 26th 2008 11:03PM
what abou tthat retarded final fantasy movie that had NOTHING to do with final fantasy!!!!(not advent children) >.
GenoJul 26th 2008 7:42PM
Yeah Mario Bros. should of been number 1
Yoshi was a velociraptor, the first enemy they fight is a granny with jetpack shoes and Dennis Hopper makes a horrible Bowser
UnknownsoldierilJul 27th 2008 12:59AM
Hopper didn't play bowser, he was King Koopa
Dan SmithJul 26th 2008 7:59PM
okay, games are often very bad movies...but no good video game movies? FF7: Advent Children was a good continuation of the game, but also unique enough that the movie had an independent message and storyline that didn't need the game to be good. Also, MK I was decent, not saying much about MK II though.
BreeJul 27th 2008 8:41PM
You but FF& was a special game. That game is like MEANT to be a movie. You know what I mean? Like an engaging coherent sotry line and all that. A lot of games really just should be movies. Like Mario. Never again Mario.
MonkeyJul 26th 2008 10:43PM
Critics today... I swear. It's like they have nothing left to live for, so they rant on about whatever they get their greasy little fingers on.
A movie shouldn't be bad, because it didn't completely follow the original form of a game. It should be bad, because direction, as well as production, was bad. I firmly believe the direction of most of these movies ((Minus 2)) were very good. I was entertained, and THAT is what makes a movie. Not whether her pants should have been black, instead of red ((Or whatever)).
Peace.

Okay...this one sucked!

I actually agree alot with what he said, house of the dead was HORRIBLE. Absolutely horrible. As for the Resident Evil films, they slapped Capcom in the face by tearing the story to shreds and serving it to the masses as a psuedo martial arts action movie instead of the dread filled horror of the games. I actually like Mario bros, because he's right in the degree it is so bad its good. DOOM had promise, but the end scene where it went into first person like the game was cheesy and unneeded. To the person that said you have to be a fan of RE to like the movie, you're absolutely wrong. Most fans of the games from the beginning absolutely hate these films. It isn't even the same category of horror!
Dani GainsvilleJul 27th 2008 2:36AM
Well, the way I see things is i'd have to agree with most the people here about critics giving bad reviews to anything just to rant.
Super Mario bros was a pretty good film, if you're a kid. Then again, both the movie and the game are generally pointed to that kind of audience.
Resident evil, I can agree on some levels with you nicholas... but you also got to remember that RE can't be ported directly into a movie for two good reasons: If you've beaten the game, it's pointless to see the movie. If you never even played the games, you have no idea what the hell is going on.
House of the Dead sucked, no arguement there. Alone in the Dark is okay, it works like a sequel to the games. Bloodrayne, I didn't get to see. I really wanted to see Postal though, the video game was pretty funny.
DOOM was actually pretty good in my opinion. It works as an alternate explination as to the reason behind the monsters. It could also probably stand on its own as a great film all around if it had a different name. On top of that, for the idiot who wrote this review, the first doom game does have a plot. You've probably haven't gotten very far at all if you havent realized that.
Cyberjack is right about the Mortal Kombat movie. Then again, Paul Anderson only helmed one good movie in his entire career called Event Horizon.
The final fantasy movies were good. Then again the games don't have any real set grounds for a movie to hold to since the majority of the games have nothing to do with each other.
As for Tron, I had no idea that was a video game nor have I ever really attempted to see the movie.
Closing note: Street Fighter is the worst adaption of all time.
GaryJul 29th 2008 2:31AM
I disagree on Resident Evil... 1,2 OR 3... never played the game but enjoyed the hell out of the movies. Critics... hehehe. They would crtique thier own turds and be wrong even then.
Grandmaster VuJul 27th 2008 4:02AM
Ha, they left out some notables such as Double Dragon! That movie totally sucked! The only redeeming quality of that poor excuse for a movie was Alyssa Milano.
