Cyber-Bullying Takes on New Dimensions

It used to be that so called cyber-bullying merely meant harassing someone via instant message or saying mean things on MySpace, but online bullying is increasingly becoming a full-on public multimedia blitz of photos, videos, and fake user profiles.

Take for example the case of Ricky Alatorre, a 16 year-old with plenty of book smarts, but not a whole lot of friends. Someone snapped a picture of Ricky in English class and put together a fake MySpace profile called "The Rictionary." The profile claims that Ricky "loves" dictionaries and is gay (he's not). Ricky has been picked on since kindergarten, but was particularly affected by the mock profile. The public nature of the mocking multiplied the sting of the school yard taunts.

Sites like MySpace and YouTube have added a whole new weapon to the arsenal of bullies. These online assaults often lead to real world consequences including fights and suicide. We think it's important for parents to take action not only if they think their child is the victim of bullying, but also if their child is the bully in question. [Source: USA Today]
