Five Things to Consider Before Buying a Digital Camera

Physical design: In-store 'test drives' are essential
There's no way around it: Your camera, which will no doubt be hauled around to the beach, the bar or on your next vacation, is going to take some abuse. This is where it's actually worth checking out the camera in a bricks-'n'-mortar storefront, like your local camera shop, to get a feel for how the camera sits in your hands, and whether it feels like it's made of cheap plastic or tough metal (hint: Go for the tough metal).
Sometimes, buttons are poorly placed: Play around with a few, and figure out which one feels best in your own hands. Remember, if you can't easily press a button to take a picture, then you aren't going to get the pictures you want. Also, try turning on the camera and taking a few pictures to see how long it takes to start up your camera, and how many seconds pass between successive shots – if it takes more than a couple of seconds, then move on.
