Judge Slaps $200 Fines On Men Whose Cell Phones Rang In Court

The title 'Justice of the Peace' takes on new meaning in an Atlanta courtroom, where a judge has slapped a $200 fine on two men whose ringing cell phones went off within minutes of each other in the middle of a hearing.
Atlanta Municipal Court Judge Herman Sloan held the two men in contempt of court for the auditory interruptions. While he finished hearing cases on his docket, he had the two men sit out the time in the jury box. Then, he offered them each a sentence with a choice: a $200 fine or 10 days in jail.
The first man claimed his cell phone was turned off. The second man claimed he was late to court and hadn't heard an earlier announcement warning people to silence their phones. Either way, the judge was none too pleased, and was quick to take action.
Both men chose the $200 fine.

The system is currupt and most judges (90%) are currupt, what do you expect. Everypone but the government is supposed to follow the rule of law.

he fined them for auditory interruption - which it was - perfectly legit.
These people should know what an interruption is and how to avoid them, if we are to trust the average man with a telephone he should exercise at least the bare minimum of common sense about it. If you wouldn't talk in the middle of the courtroom then neither should your phone ring. 1+1=2
nothing "crazy liberal" about it, though I know thats our favorite scapegoat - this ones all on the thoughtlessness of joe schmoe.

I have only three pet peeves in life...loud car stereos, rude, inconsiderate cell phone users, and unnecessarily loud motorcycles.

Good for the Judge! It's high time someone took a stand against people like these two guys who think they are above the rules! Every day I see someone who either brings food into doctors' offices, park in the no parking-or worse the handicap only-lanes or they bring phones into places phones have no place being; like Church, school performances, etc. Just this year at my son's graduation when the audience was asked not to applaud until each name had been read from the list-a few family hooted and hollered for quite a while before finally being asked to leave. Too bad they weren't fined! Maybe now these guys will get the message that rules are meant for everyone and that excuse about being late was BS-common sense tells you not to bring a phone into court!

I am in total agreement with the judge here. There are rules. The judge does have the ablility to deal with each situation individually, however, when it is someone young, they need to be taught a lesson. The best way to teach the youth of America today is by hitting their wallets!
If it was an elderly person, they might have gotten off with a warning.
I was in court one time and my mom almost got thrown out for talking. The bailif was half way there before I told her that she was not helping anyone, but hurting them. My mom was in her early 60's at the time. The judge had gone over the rules of court! So if a senior citizen can get in trouble back in the 90's, what makes these kids think they can get away with it now?? Please remember to turn your cell phones off in the following places: Hospitals, Doctors offices, Church, COURT!!! Respect yourself, respect others

Good grief! What ever happened to common sense??!! Being late and not hearing an announcement to turn off your cell phone is a LAME excuse! Anyone with sense would know to turn your cellphone off or on vibrate when entering a courtoom. That knucklehead deserved what he got. Now if I could just get that judge to go to the movies with me...

As usual, posters who take a negative view of the judge's policy of fining errant cell phone users $200 when their cell phone goes off in court fail to recognize that while the errant cell phone user may be in court once in a while, or once in a lifetime, the judge is there every day, year in and year out. Can one imagine, if a judge is on the bench 8 hours a day, five days a week, trying to conduct serious business and cell phones were constantly ringing, breaking his chain of thought when he is considering weighty problems of the litigants before him, how irritating this would become? Rules were made to be followed, whether they are traffic rules, rules about smoking in public places, or rules about cell phones in court. Cell phone users should just grow up.

Yes, the whole world is out of step. You are the only person who is right. NOT! Grow up and respect your self and respect others.

This sounds simular to this one incident where a man answered his phone in class and his professor took his phone, threw it on the ground and smashed it.
