Bill Gates Leaving His Fortune to Charity, Not His Kids

While being the child of Bill and Melinda Gates no doubt has its share of perks, financial security may not necessarily be one of them. Bill Gates has promised that he will leave his vast $58 billion fortune to the charity started by him and his wife, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and not to his offspring.
Gates -- who is officially stepping down as the chairman of Microsoft next Friday -- said of the decision that he and his wife made, "We want to give it back to society in the way that it will have the most positive impact."
The money will go to fund educational and health projects around the globe, which is certainly a much more positive use than buying a yacht for the kids. [Source: Daily Mail]

I think Gate's priorities are some what out of balance. Sure leave a ton of money to charity but for heavens sake do not forsake your flesh and blood to dole out billions to countries where corruption and strife might never be resolved.
Children are God's gift to us all and they should be revered above complete strange entities that possibly will always require charity .
Good and noble statements Bill but you brought children into this world and your first responsibity is to their well being , be it with love and if you have the means , make their life comfortable so they might prosper.

To the author, Terrence O'Brien: it is not your place to comment on where Gates' fortune should go. If he wants to give it to his kids great, or to charity great as well. He made the fortune and it's his to do with as he wishes. It's time we stop trying to re-distribute wealth in this country. This isn't a socialistic economy.

One's thing's for damn sure: whatever charity he give it to will use it much more wisely than will the government.

his 58 billion. but since this has been said, how much of that has gone into his family? its worth 58 billion, but, people spend much more then what they have, so he couldve used like triple of that into his family.
NatashaJun 21st 2008 3:50PM
Yes, he did say that years ago. Though, he did leae his kids like 1% of his estate. The rest goes to charity.
GilJun 21st 2008 3:53PM
C'mon now. Ever hear of gifting? Those kids are going to get what they need before Daddy dies. It's pretty hard to give ALL your assets away when you're worth $70 billion, give or take a few billion.
Don't feel to sorry for the kids. They won't starve.

HEY BILL I AM CHARITY, I WAS DISABLED IN APRIL 2007, SEND ME SOME MONEY PLEASE... SSD ONLY PAYS $1255 MONTHLY....

Good for Bill and Melinda, it is their money; they can do what they want with it. By giving it to charity they avoid it going to Uncle Sam and our politicians to spend (good for them). They have always been extremely generous with their fortune; this is just another example of it. Compare them to The Donald and Ted Turner when it comes to doing good things with their fortune. Keep up the good work.

bill is definetly doing the right thing.my brother died about 16 years ago and left his only child a trust fund, though it wasnt billions is was about a million.my mother raised the child since he was two and gave him any and everything his heart desired.he turned 18 a few months ago,we all had a bet how long the money would last.exactly 7 weeks he was pennyless,he is now in jail for stealing to get drug money.so sad.

Its a common Tax Strategy. The principal goes to a Charity, tax free, and the income from the principal goes to his kids.
MarkJun 21st 2008 4:40PM
I wonder if the CEO's of Halliburton and Exxon will do the same?

You know those trust fund were set up when the kids were younger...they have there share waiting down the line......probably invested into CD-S.....
RichJun 21st 2008 4:08PM
It he took 1/100 of 1% and put it into an account for his kids, they would have 58 million dollars. I could scape by on10% of that 1/100% and spend 290K a year without touching the principal. So, tell me..... do ya think he may have a bit squirreled away for them? If he sent me 100k, I would have it turned into 400k in a year. Money makes money fast when yuo know how.
KelleyJun 21st 2008 4:07PM
On the surface it sounds like some Family Issues we are not privy to....However I'm inclined to believe the kids are very well provided for and this is a positive way of avoiding Inheritence tax....it is wonderful to be able to contribute to the Greater Good of mankind....and perpetuate a lasting resource to finance that Greater Good..............

I would leave every dime to my son. The way I figure it, if I had worked that hard to be worth that much money, I would leave a FAMILY legacy. But you can bet they will all have Microsoft stocks and trust funds, etc., not to mention any property they own.
Plus it doesn't make a lot of sense to give away all that money and totally cut your own kids out...that's what contesting a will is all about. And, since he will likely die before his wife, they is always the possibility that she will change things after he's gone.
DezJun 21st 2008 4:12PM
Great. Now his kids will eventually be applying for the charity money he and his wife left behind.
TheLongViewJun 21st 2008 4:21PM
In my heart I truly doubt that it has as much to do with 'charity' as an egomaniacal desire to be 'unsurpassed' by one's children.. in essence to be the 'king'(or queen) in perpetuity. A lasting legacy which cannot be eclipsed and will live on eternally..
..in other words he became so focused on work and success that he ignored the most important things and spoiled his children to occupy their time and not distract him from doing more work. Now that he has accumulated so many 'points' he doesn’t want the sniveling excuses of children he ruined(of course that's an undeniable exaggeration) to blow all his 'points' and destroy his chance at immortality.
Money is Power; Have enough Money and have Absolute Power, which corrupts Absolutely.. To be corrupted Absolutely is desire Immortality.
Most truly Great Men are anonymous.

He earned his vast fortune and made a name for himself. It wasn't handed to him. Why should anyone put him down for trying to help those less fortunate? I know his "kids" are not less fortunate and am sure they will get something. But when did it become about getting money when your parents die and not about the loss of 2 people who raised you and nurtered you? That shows the state of this world today. There are too many people on this planet who are given fortunes who screw it up already.
