Want to Clone Your Dog? Then Bid on This Auction...

Is Fido on his last legs? Well, he may have a second chance, in a manner of speaking, as long as you're sure to collect a DNA sample.
BioArts International, a San Francisco-based firm, has announced it will auction off five slots for people who want clones produced of their dogs – plus one more slot for a lucky contest winner. Despite the lessons we all learned from Stephen King's 'Pet Sematery' (in which those animals who are resurrected come back evil), BioArts claims its dog clones will not only match their donor subjects in appearance, but also in personality.
We'll admit, we're simultaneously intrigued and creeped out (especially by all the weird "clone" images of old dogs and young dogs together on the BioArts site).
The "Best Friends Again" auction will commence July 5, with five separate bidding rounds running in succession. Winning bids will have 30 days to successfully collect and supply DNA from their dogs so BioArts can get to work. Now, before you get too excited, know this: Bids start at $100,000, so you'll need deep pockets to participate in the auction.
Also, no cats, you cat-people out there.
The BioArts project got its start back in 1998 after the successful cloning of Dolly the sheep was announced to the world the year before. An organization called Genetic Savings & Clone was established to collect the DNA of a dog named Missy, who was both beloved by her family and apparently advanced in age. The so-called Missyplicity project wasn't able to clone the dog before her death, but one of the participants, a South Korean scientist, eventually did clone a dog named Snuppy in 2006. One year later, clones of Missy were created and apparently they look and behave much as the original dog did, even down to the canine's odd preference for broccoli.
So, if you could clone your dog, would you? [Source: BestFriendsAgain.com, via KGO-San Francisco]

If I had over $100,000 I would donate not pay. But if I got it free, yeah, I probably WOULD consider it. What bothers me is people passing judgment on those who would. People blow that much on gambling, cars etc. If what makes them happy is a clone, it isn't anyone's business. Spend your time worrying about the suffering of backyard bred and puppy mill animals. At least, agree or not, those wanting CLONES do it out of love.
As for the silly "we don't have the right"... I figure if we can do it, be it fly, go to the moon or mars, and it isn't illegal, we have the right.

What a terrible idea in an overpopulated world.

I agree with the sentiments of LET GOD....sometimes I sit and think that the "world" couldn't possibly get more BIZARRE...then this stuff comes up. It not only creeps me out but also makes me very sad for the part of the human population that thinks this is on OKAY thing to do.This is so wrong on many levels!!---People that have this much money to bid, should definitely visit a shelter and decide if they still want to bid on something as they walk through and look into the eyes of all those sad souls wanting a home!!!!!!!

This company needs to pay attention to all the people responding, I hope they do not get people interested in this "auction"! $100,000.00???? Are you kidding me!!!! Come on people, if you have that kind of money to dispose of, please, donate it to an animal charity of your choice! As so many have already said, there are thousands of loving pets abandoned in shelters awaiting very tragic ends, we do not need "cloned" dogs & cats! This is a waste of science, lets look at fuel alternatives, or ways of feeding the hundreds of thousands starving everyday! You people are brilliant scientists! Use the gift God gave you! You can do better than this!

This creeps me out on way too many levels. I love my doggie Paint, She is one of a kind. I would never diminish her by thinking that she could in any way be duplicated!
However... What if we could make puppy mills illegal and offer only cloned purebreeds? Only licensed labs would be allowed to offer spayed and Neutered animals? No more breeding female dogs to death, no more unsafe unsanitary conditions and the kind of people who have to have "The perfect dog" (Ick) would be diverted to these labs. The labs could be taxed to support the animal shelters as well.
I know that many of you will be creeped out by the thought, But sometimes you have to fight fire with fire...

It's funny how the poll says 41% would do it but I'm not seeing evidence of this on the comments board.I think it's incredibly stupid and in very poor taste.I have saved all my animals from shelters, pounds or abusive families-SAVE A ONE-OF-A-KIND animal!!!

if i had that kind of money I would bid to clone my baby dogs!!
life goes on but they are forever one of a kind!!

People should realize that if your dog "Buddy" was dying and you cloned it, the clone would have a different personality from the original Buddy, because it would not go through the identical circumstances that Buddy 1 had gone through. Personalities are formed through experiences. Clones will not necessarily be identical in personality, only in physical appearance. Also, cloning takes so many tries to get it right and then the clones end up having health issues, especially with the respiratory system.

I love my babies dearly, but when they're gone, they're gone. The originals can never be duplicated! I will grieve for a while and it will be hard on me, but when the pain subsides, I will be at the local Humane Society looking to adopt a beautiful, loyal, loving mixed-breed dog. Or two.

I have my 2 "girls". I wouldn't trade them for the world. But I wouldn't clone them either. God made everyone unique. Humans and animals. It pains me to visit a shelter and to see those faces, some filled with hope and some filled with despair. We, as a society, cannot continue to allow the euthinization of innocent animals for lack of wanting or cloning. Who are these agencies to play God?

I am sorry it pisses off all the wanna-be Bible thumpers, but I sure would clone my dog. If it lives then God gave it the soul to live with. No life is created without God's will, so that argument, that you can clone the body, but not the soul is stupid. Second I used to work at the dog shelter. I worked there for 5 years. There were many fine dogs to be had, thats where I got mine. She was rescued from a science lab. Her personality was permenatly altered by her experences there. I have always wondered what she would be like if she had been mine from birth. And cloning her is the closest I could ever come to knowing that. Sure there are pleanty of other dogs out there that would make good pets. But none of them are her. If you truly love your dog, and your dog is the perfect dog for you, go ahead, and clone it.

this is dispicable, unethical and unmorally sound.....people who clone should have THEIR head examined. NO ONE HAS A RIGHT TO PLAY GOD!!!!
KmmJun 20th 2008 2:08PM
Are we going to clone PEOPLE next? Ridiculous.

I'd like to clone my wife back to when she liked to have sex. : )

I think your all a bunch of dumba**'s. This is what we as humans have been waiting for. First its animals, then comes humans. How bout never having to witness your significant other pass away because of some stupid disease that we call AIDs. How bout letting your children live to see their grandparents or great grandparents. I am not one of these people you call rich. Nor am I a person who lets some book rule their life day in and day out. I just think its about time that we see a breakthrough in medical science. Who knows maybe this will give that person in your life who is dieing from Cancer or AIDs a second chance to be happy and live again without being in pain from the kemo (sorry if i misspelled that) everyday. But please people dont be so narrow minded and shut something down because it is new and isnt the "IN" thing to do. I for one will be praying that some we could find a way to clone humans. I would love to be able to have my parents live as long as they can. So .... lets not close our minds to something that might actually help us live longer and happier!!!!

I would pay 100.000 dollars if I could clone myself so I could harvest body parts.

Creepy. . . but cool. . . but creepy. . . would you clone your dog???
AbdoJun 24th 2008 10:03AM
I'm surprised noone has mentioned the episode "Handbanana" from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, where they clone a dog. Must-see for everyone who read this article.

I agree with people that say we should think about adoption not cloning. My only problem is what the shelters put people through who want to adopt animals. We once tried to adopt and were told we had to surrender our taxes, social security information, and even give them a credit report. We ended up leaving them and adopting from a private individual. I have no hard feelings against the ASPCA but they could make it a little easier for people to adopt. And to Susan who says to donate the money, they should instead of paying to clone the dog. Memories are in our minds, not in our blood.
