Bus Companies Adding Anti-Hijacker Tech

You may not have noticed, but buses just got all Buses 2.0: a new GPS device, already installed on thousands of NYC buses, enables authorities to remotely control one should it be hijacked. They'll be able to slow the vehicle down to 5 mph and prevent it from restarting once it has stopped. The idea, obviously, is to prevent jihad-style bus attacks on the city.

Essentially, the device is attached to the internal computer on the bus, and allows a dispatcher to pinpoint its location, as well as to identify its speed and direction. And then, with the push of a button, take control of its speed.

Oddly, though Gray Line double-decker tourist buses, Coach USA, and New Jersey Transit are all on board, New York City Transit is not using the tech yet. "This system requires GPS, and right now, our GPS program is in the pilot stage, with 155 buses being tested out of a fleet of 4,500," spokesman Charles Seaton said.

Still, we imagine they'll get there at some point. And create yet more jobs where video game skillz would come in super handy. [Source: NY Post]
