Another major component of securing your new computer is a decent firewall, which tracks incoming and outgoing data when you're online. Windows has a built-in firewall, but it doesn't go as far to protect your computer as a dedicated firewall application. It also doesn't allow you the same level of control that you'll get from the third party options. If you're going to be out connecting to open Wi-Fi networks with your new laptop, then upgrading to a stronger firewall is a necessity.

Both Comodo and Zone Alarm offer free, top notch firewall products for personal use and we honestly couldn't choose one over the other. So try one out. Or try them both, but just promise us that you won't even think about logging on at your local coffee shop with out installing one of these.
