Top Noise-Canceling Headphones 2

These aren't cheap – at $300, they cost the same as the high-end Bose cans -- but they're about as good as it gets in the category. They eliminate as much ambient noise as the Quiet Comfort 2's, and are the best ones we've heard for listening to music, thanks to Creative's X-Fi technology, which restores portions of the sound that were lost during compression – essentially, making your music sound a whole lot fuller and richer. They're also nice and big, so they go over your ears instead of on them, making them more comfortable than other pairs we tested (not to mention keeping out more sound because of the better coverage). If you've got the dough, these are definitely a great option -- we'd say even better than the Bose.

It seems you are confusing the Bose QC 2's (around and over ear, in the photo) with the QC 3's (on ear, not pictured)? And it seems you missed the switch that turns off the noise canceling function to give rich, clear music and other sounds in environments where noise canceling is not needed..

Turning them off does just that (the Bose that is) turns them off. You cannot listen to music or anything else unless they're on ..which means noise canceling has to always be on.

I have the Audio-Technica QuietPoint ATH-ANC3 in-ear headphones and they work great. They are small and easy to take with you on an airplane as well.

The Bose on-ear QC-3 is compared with an over-ear headset. The Bose over-ear headset is the QC-2 (pictured). To help consumers make better choices, it is better to compare apples with apples.
There are TWO switches - not one - on the Bose QC-2. In addition to the external on-off switch, there is an internal Hi-Lo switch that turns the noise-canceling on-off without turning the headset off. The cord is plugged into the headset. The switch is located on the plug. The little instruction booklet is quite clear.
