If your Dad is the reading type and isn't too hooked on tradition, then consider a Kindle e-reader from Amazon, which eschews paper in favor of easy to reach e-ink (a fancy name for a glare-free screen) . The book-sized device is lighter than the real thing and automatically downloads everything from daily newspapers (New York Times, Wall St Journal, Le Monde, etc) and blogs to any of more than 80,000 books from Amazon (which average around $10 a pop -- much cheaper than the book versions). This thing will keep his hands clean (no dirty newspaper ink) and his bad back relieved (no more books, papers, or magazines in the briefcase).
