France Bans Pro-Anorexia Sites and Blogs
With more and more celebrities treading the fine line between waifish and sickly, there's a disturbing but growing trend among many women who support anorexia and encourage others to try it. This so-called Pro-Ana movement encourages women to eat less, vomit what they do eat, and lie to their doctors to keep from getting caught. Various sites are popping up giving advice and support for would-be "friends of Ana," enough to lead to the French government to officially ban the sites.
The problem is particularly large in France, with its huge fashion industry, an industry that has always been associated with the disorder. Now, those found to be hosting such Pro-Ana sites will be subject to two years in prison or a €30,000 (about $48,000) fine. Too harsh, you think? This quote from one pro-ana blog might just change your mind:
I am the only person who can tell you the truth. Everyone else lies to you because they love you but I'm going to tell you a secret: in the depths of their heart, they are disappointed with what has happened to you. Their talented girl has become fat and lazy. But I am going to change all that! From The Independent

I agree. I go to these sites as well, but I did not go until I had been suffering the disorder for many years on my own. I finally found a place where I could let my guard down, be honest, be myself, and no longer be silently ashamed of something that was so large a part of my life. I could talk to people who understood what I was going through and listened to the things that were bothering me, instead of only critisizing eating disorder. When someone new comes on the sites, if they do not already have a disorder, everyone in there warns those people of the horrible things that come with it and tell them how to lose weight in a healthy manner. We support each other and often times save each other's lives. I know that the girls on some of these sites have saved my life before, and I have formed lasting friendships with some who thought they wanted this but by hearing our stories realized they needed to do it the right way.

As sick as these sites are I hate to see Americans who would ban them. What ever happened to freedom of speech. Heck where is the ban on Nazi hate site, or on the WestBoro Babtist Church(look that one up). France can ban what they like but is it really right to supress free speech???
WatcherApr 18th 2008 3:50AM
It would be nice to have free speech again, but unfortunately, we live in times of hate -- when really sick minds find others who share their sickness, form groups. From these groups come movements who feel jusified in carrying out their twisted works on the innocent. The Nazis, KKK and many others, started from one person expressing hate for others. You have to draw the line somewhere!

Man is the only animal that has made an art of trying to find new and better ways of destroying themselves and others. If such efforts were made in new ways of creativity, what a better world this would be.

Well, to sum up both obesity and anorexia are dangerous. A lot more people die of obesity though.
The real point here is what happened to their freedom of speech? You think this is a great idea, because you agree with their point but wait until you don't agree and the government prosecutes you for writing what you think.
Stupid French. Unbelievable. Go lose another war.

Freedom of Speech has not existed in France for quite some time now, unfortunately the people of The United States are allowing their own Constitution to be destroyed by the Republicrats as well (yes, BOTH parties are responsible).
Remember, freedom of speech is the right to express your opinion even when that opinion is unpopular. But with the removal of habeas corpus as a right of citizenship in the United States, who will even know when the Thought Police come for YOU?

People like TMZ are no help in this country when they put out insanity like saying Jennifer Love Hewitt is fat (since when is a size 2 even slightly so?) and picking on Valerie Bertinelli (I'm sorry but she looks absolutely great these days and to say otherwise is sheer stupidity). The mentality that you cen never be too rich or too thin is what's causing most teenagers to resort to binging and purging and so on...whatever happened to looking like a real human being and being happy with it?

This is an infringement on free speech. I'll admit there is a lot of bogus junk on the internet (anti-semitic hate sites, etc.) which I disapprove of, but just because I disapprove of something doesn't give me the authority to ban it (just because you think alcohol is bad for people doesn't give you the right to impose your beliefs on everyone else).
People should have a right to say whatever they want as long as they don't (slander someone, commit an act of fraud, or make a threat to someone's life).
Now here we are, prosecuting people who have hurt no one, who have initiated no conflict. Many of you believe that it's the government's business to get into the personal lives of its citizens-I think we are moving closer and closer towards complete statism and collectivism, towards an ultimate Nanny State, where we are treated like children, having been deemed unable to make our own decisions in life.
Anorexia is a serious medical condition, and is very unhealthy. But rather than trying to tear down people's websites (which ought to be able to say whatever the webmaster has designated), one can, and should of course, spread awareness about anorexia-instead of infringing in free speech.

All those hunks at the gym Carb up, and puke to stay hot. Men have it as bad, just different.

I never said anorexia wasn't an problem. However, when was the last time you saw someone suffering from anorexia?? I see countless obese people everyday. And the obese children!! It is quickly becoming a problem much worse than anorexia has ever been. I'm am sorry for the pain all the anorexic people have gone through, and I'm not trying to minimize that. But they are a small minority of people with eating disorders. And yes, I think obesity is the result of a serious eating problem. Anyone that is 250-300lbs and not pure muscle has some serious issues with food. Maybe it isn't officially classified as an eating disorder... yet.
freakwhosingsApr 20th 2008 11:27PM
Again, you must be blind. People freaking DIE from anorexia. To think anorexic people don't "suffer" is insanely ignorant. Have you ever met an anorexic person? Have you ever seen their ribs poking out, ever heard them gasping for breath, ever seen them sit down after they walk up the stairs because their haert is starting to give out? Have you ever watched a person cry because they miss food so much but now it physically HURTS just to swallow? Wow. Just wow, that's all I can say.

Hooray for France!!!! I am a victum of an eating disorder. I am the mother of a daughter who fell VICTUM to the disorder as a) a way to cope, and b) uncontrolled OCD. It doesn't just effect the person that is going through it and I think that's what people forget. This is an all consuming disorder financially and emotionally on everyone. NOTHING will bring you to your knees faster than seeing someone you love, especially a child, starve themselves to death and feeling completely helpless to stop it. I say to all PRO-ANA supporters who spew their poison and drag innocent victums into their world, may you BURN in HELL!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU MICHELLE!
That 'quote' is from the Letter from Ana, written by a psychiatrist years ago as an understanding of anorexia.
Some of the websites really are only for support and help, whether you're ready to recover or not. They promote recovery if you're ready, because you can't just force someone into recovery.
I hate when people who've never dealt with this act like they're brilliant and know all about it, jeez.
GOct 13th 2008 6:35AM
Ive been both anorexic and obese in my life, and right now id rather be a size 2 than a 14.I was alot happier.ALOT HAPPIER.One of the most brilliant teachers I had in school told us it is better to skip a meal than pollute our bodies with the garbage sitting on most grocery store shelves that isnt real food. If you want to really change the world how about being real human beings and not passing judgment on people regardless of their weight, religion, politics, and etc. We are here on this Earth for one thing and that is to be nonjudgmental and to learn from our own life experiences and from other, and to be loving toward each other. No body is better than anyone, and everyone seems to forget that.We are all the same on the inside, created by the same spirit, god, whatever you wanna believe, but whatever we are the same, and all related if youd search far enough back.So how about not judging me for being anorexic, fat,or christian and I wont judge you for being close minded, arrogent or stupid.
gOct 11th 2008 2:21PM
you know whats stupid everyone is all about legal action against these sites because they say it harms girls and boys but how about caring more about taking legal action against the sites where young girls and boys are being raped and molested,or sites where young girls and women and men are doing and showing everything.HOW IS THIS BS LEGAL.I heard more than one idiot saying it is against his rights and freedom of expression as an american for anyone to stop him from dealing in child porn so idiot politics wont go after him but up on there high horses they and some in the world want to pick on france for something that is a choice that is only hurting the people who choose eating disorders.
