Disney Fans Petition to Save Virtual Magic Kingdom
Disney's Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is, as the name implies, a rather magical place. It's also not a place that is close (or cheap) enough for everyone to attend whenever they want. It was no surprise, then, that when Disney launched an online Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) back in 2005, kids everywhere wanted to get in on the action. And, just as in real life, said children aren't too inclined to leave, either. As a result, Disney's announcement of the end of support for the VMK has resulted in an online petition launched by the kids and their parents, according to WKMG Orlando.
Over 11,000 people have signed the petition SaveVMKToday.com, a site set up by a team of players and parents of players who don't want the site to go away. Even so, Disney has said the site has already been up far longer than originally planned, and now plans to wrap the service for good on May 21.
Given how successful most online petitions are, it doesn't seem altogether likely this one will change anything. Sorry, kids -- maybe you should start a protest on Facebook instead?

Most of the Adults do have jobs. There is time after coming work where we would like to relax and chat with some friends that we have made online.
Also there are parents who have to stay home with their children that are sick for different reasons.
So all Adults on VMK aren't sit at home lazy couch potatoes.

As a teacher, VMK was a place I could connect with my students after school for some Disney fun. I was able to build rapport with families and childern. My test scores SOARED because I took the time to make connections with my students.
What angers me most, Disney did not listen to their fan base. We want our game!
We would pay to play VMK!

No your students are becoming smarter, you're just becoming dumber because of this game. I really wish the worst luck to all VMK fans, I hope this game is gone forever.

The children and adults are not just signing petitions to try to save VMK. Mass amounts of emails, letters, and faxes are being sent to the top people at Disney. Many even call Disney everyday to try to change their minds. Please also refer to the newest act that the VMK community is trying to do to save VMK. Children of all ages are printing out their little avatars and sending them into Disney to show them how much their character means to them. As an adult, I feel VMK should stay open, for it is one of the safest places for children to play in. You cannot reveal any personal information such as numbers (to prevent age and phone numbers to be revealed) and certain words are prohibited. Children are going to play on the computer in this technologically advanced age. I would rather a child play and chat on VMK then talk to a child molester in an unsafe chat room or another unsafe game.

This is life for a no life adult VMK player:
Get up - go to work - play vmk - sleep
I feel sorry for unsocial people like that!

People can no longer afford to go to Disney parks, but my grandchildren have played on VMK since before they started school. To them, that is Disney. Disney's prices are unbelievable, and who can afford the gas to get there. Leave VMK alone. It's as close to Disney as many people will ever get.

To those of you who believe that the adults that play this game have no life - you are so wrong. Many of the adults who play this game play with their children. I am one of these adults. I have a life, a job, a social world outside of VMK, but I am first and foremost a parent who is involved in what my children do. I spend my days working, being a parent, driving my kids to all their activities, going on firld trips, helping with homework, and so many other daily activities that parents do. After all of that is said and done, yes I like to play VMK. So do I have a life? Absolutely! Probably much busier than most of you, so stop bashing those of us that have found a hobby - that we love that enhances our lives socially. When it seems that you have all the time in the world to talk about other people's lack of a life. What kind of life do you have? If someone wre to tell you that you can no longer talk to Hundreds of your friends, you would be upset too. And essentually, that is exactly what Disney is doing. Taking away the possibility of ever contacting many of the friends we have made on VMK. Because of the safety restrictions in the game, we cannot provide our friends with any contact information - therefore when VMK closes, we lose friendships that have grown over three years. And that is what people are fighting for. Are there other games? Sure, but not one of these games offers something for everyone in my family without having violent online battles or adult content that is totally inappropriate for children and still offers the sense of community and Disney magic that VMK has. This is the only game of its type. The only place online where I feel my children are safe from adult content and violence, but can enjoy time with friends. If this makes me a loser for being a good, active, involved parent - so be it.

Amen, sister! Preach it! I so believe in every word you are saying and my son and I have played this game TOGETHER. It is "our" character! We never spend credits without consulting each other, we do quests together, etc. It has been a great bonding experience for us. I love what you wrote!!!

VMK was a game where everyone could play and I don't see why they had to close it. They need to get it up and running again so everyone that played can be happy again.
