Robots to Take Over 3.5 Million Jobs in Japan

This isn't necessarily bad thing for friends across the Pacific. It seems that much of Japan's population is getting older. In fact researchers expect to see a drop in the Japanese work force of about 16 percent by 2030, and filling positions as citizens retire is just part of the problem. The number of elderly people in the country is ballooning, and caring for these citizens may be one of the major industries that robots play an important role in.
The Machine Industry Memorial Foundation doesn't see robots completely replacing humans, but allowing people the time to focus on more important things. Robots could clean house, monitor the health of the elderly, bathe them, read to your kids, and of course, deliver you a beer.
Researchers expect 40 percent of Japan's population to be over 65 by the year 2055, making the robot workforce a pressing concern.

Lou Dobbs is my hero. He's the only person telling how we are being screwed and by who. Although the who is no secret.

Hey everyone - this is for real, too. Did anyone here, hear the story of all the waitress jobs in the U.S. they plan to get rid of by something like another few yrs. or so? I saw them talking about it on CNBC tv, one morning. A machine will take our orders. They already have a pilot one going on in a Restaurant in Fl. I believe it is. Sorry I can't remember so many of the details, but these two guys were talking about it and this thing is coming. The one guy praised the success in Fla. I visualize it being something like self-check out at the grocery stores but each table at most places to eat will have these little machines where one puts the order in. I hate the concept of it. So much for eathing out in the future! Oh, and those check out lanes in Walmart, I hate those, as well! Used one last week and reached for a heavy bag of dog food and the damned thing slipped, sliced the side of my small finger wide open on the side of it. Bled like a stuck pig, I should have sued!!!

I don't see how robots taking over jobs is a good thing. What part do people not understand nowadays that have nice cushy jobs higher up in the food chain. Just because you can replace someone, doesnt mean you're going to be doing a good thing. You're putting people out of jobs, and some people without a way to feed their families. How in the world do you think its a good thing to do something like that? Like a wise man once said ''though you can, doesnt always mean you should'', its similar to drinking and driving, just because you think you can drive while you're intoxicated, doesnt dictate that you should.

Totally agree with James Carter above...
That is one of the biggest problems right now, top executives making huge salaries, public figures making tons of money in their multi-year contracts. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It's interesting how everything can go up in price so quickly (sky rocketing), and at the same time we're stuck and lucky if we even get 3% yearly raises.
Company owners obviously want huge profits, price goes up (fuel prices), they make more and more money, the working class suffers for it. AND here we are today, at the start of a recession. Start eliminating jobs through automation, and what then? More people are out of jobs and I'm 99% confident in saying the price per product isn't coming down in price with the reduced cost of overhead (labor).

ok, its really this simple, this is from what the article dictates, going to take place in about 22 years, in japan, where the population is falling, and they have a strong sense of naturalisim so they wont let anyone in to fill in the gap that will be left when about 16% of the workforce drops, then 40% of the population will be over 65 retireing age, 25 yeras later, so instead of letting people who they dont want in they're country in to fill in the gap of the work force they are instead replacing them with something to handle that, and honestly you are forgetting the bigger picture, eventually someone is going to decide to desing bigger and better home robots, and they will need humans to desing that, and then build prtotypes and all the like, now the actual assembley line work will most likely be done by machines, but that still creates jobs for humans, so instead of competeing as much over car models maybe companys will compete over robot models, and then with the advancement of robots you should take into consideration the even greater advandcement of computers, all of these things need people to do them, so as such while you will be destroying some jobs, you will also be creating an entire new market for jobs. That being said, anyone whos trying to make a political argument about something as insignificant as using robot labor, should stop, its true that most of us will probably be out done in the physicall aspect of life by robots who are stronger and better, but those of us too old, or lazy to get good at something to make robots better, in turn giving you a job with some security will have perished (not in a bad way, im talking natturally passing) before the robots actually go ahead and take our jobs, SO, if you are looking to the future perhaps look into robotics for a new carrer or maybe Aero Space, because once we can send an intelligent, or moderately so being to another planet, we will be, and that could be good for jobs too, as someone said earlier when one door closes another opens, become a botonist and creat new food stuffs that will allow humans live longer without as much food, and that will cost almost nothing, that sounds like a good idea, then it wont matter weather or not the robots really run everything or not. Do something that the robots can't and you will be fine and have job security, if you can't do something that the robots can't then you are a waste of life and should die.

The world GNP is projected of the next couple yrs to be at around 3.5% growth. The USA's is supposed to be flat or even negative approaching a recession. France, Germany & England's growth rate only at 1 1/2 to 2%. China, India & Russia on the other hand are supposed to grow at 7 to 9% during that time. We do indeed expect low cost products & top wages while bitching our way into extinction. We can't compete with populations 4 times our size & that same labor force willing to work for a fifth the cost. Bitch, moan & groan all you want, america is toast with a younger spoiled generation who can't pour piss out of a boot but are learning their ethics off Youtube & Myspace. I shutter to see who'll be minding shop here in 2 generations if we don't get serious about the reality of our future... Maybe the Japanese are at least putting their trust in automation,, our populace is failing the test...

This is nothing short of workplace genocide. It reminds me of an aviation video that mentioned pilotless passenger planes.Money is an evil that has come to rule this world.

Re. comment of G Cole: How about the truth that a True American is one who works for a living, pays his taxes and is a U.S. Citizen by ethical means (either born from true US Citizen parents not by foreigners using "the baby" to exploit us; or one who became a U.S. Citizen via the system like I did and certainly, came to this country with our own money and paid our way). What you have described are the blood suckers and ingrates that exploit the benefits of this country and certainly cannot be "true Americans." Perhaps the real problem is the greedy who have compromised everything this country stood for to exploit, sue, use, abuse and whatever it takes to make the money and "screw" one's neighbor's rights to a safe, industrious and prosperous country where an average working person can buy a house, live in peace, get a decent education and live without fear because the country takes care of their "own" true Americans and stops tolerating lawyers that defend the criminals, liars, abusers, etc. that have cost the American public outrageous taxes; and how about the greedy credit card companies who supply money to the greedy politicians in Washington? Are they "true Americans"?????

I have been saying this for 20 years, one day in the future there will not be enough jobs for the population. Education or no education, electronics & PC's doing formerly human jobs will out weigh the combined ratio. It will happen it's just a matter of time. here's a old song that tells the story. IN THE YEAR 2525...In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, or say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to do
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs not nothing to do
Some machine is doing that for you
In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long black tube
In the year 7510
If God's a-comin' he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
Guess it's time for the Judgement day
In the year 8510
God's gonna shake his mighty head
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man's gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew
Now man's reign is through
But through the eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday
In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do or say
Is in the pill you took today ....(fading
What will the world do then? I love computers & new technology...BUT total chaos is coming & there is nothing that can stop it! Pandora's Box has been opened...theres no going back ! THANK GOD I WILL NOT BE HERE TO FACE SUCH A DISASTER...If anyone thinks I'm wrong? Tell me how The World can avoid it? Saving money by using technology has & will allways be a companies goal. You can't knock them for that, but in the long rum the earth is doomed with over population & not enough jobs!
