Trapster: Get Warnings About Speed Traps on Your Cell Phone

Trapster is about speed traps. Trapster lets drivers report the location of speed traps, red light cameras, and other locations where you're likely to get a ticket.
The service can use Wi-Fi or GPS to find your location and sends you audio alerts when you're approaching a ticket threat. Users report the locations of traps and are rated on their reliability. The system gives greater weight to those that are rated more reliably. Users can also customize the alerts they want, so that they only receive notice of red light cameras or the like. Information about red light cameras stays in Trapster's database indefinitely, but speed trap data is only kept for an hour, with the expectation that the officers will move on to a new location.
Trapster will work with many different mobile platforms, including Nokia's Symbian based handsets, Windows Mobile, and Blackberries. The service is available now, though the site was down when we tried to visit it.

Corrections to my previous post (for the Grammer Police)
- WRITE my left nut a ticket.
-Once when I was arrested.
There are probably more mistakes but I have to go because my favorite show is about to come on and I'll be watching it from my drivers seat on my way home.

The police who patrol the interstates are there trying to protect the lives of those of us who actually obey the law, and to slow down and ticket you a-holes that think you can drive 85 or 90mph without killing yourself and the rest of us. How many feet do you need to stop an
overgrown SUV or Hummer at 80 or 90mph???? Stay off my bumper or I'll demonstrate it for you!!!

Some of the posts are so accurate. Others are ignorant. Here's my rant:
First I want to agree with the post that questioned the intelligence of checking your cell phone for speed traps at 80. I couldn't agree more. I say, put the phone down and drive. Get a Blu-tooth for talking.
All of you naive people who believe that it's easy to drive the "speed limit" and that the cops are out there attempting to protect our safety by issuing citations, I say, Get real!! A few miles per hour over the posted limit is not as serious as the cop driving 100 mph to catch you. I have nothing against policeman of any type. Many are my customers and friends. Most policemen who write traffic citations care little or nothing about the safety aspect. They are interested in the quota and income aspect of citation writing. The same applies to the seat belt citations but don't get me started on that.
I noticed some ignorant posts regarding the Jimmy Carter fiasco regarding 55 MPH speed limit back many years ago. To those misguided souls who thought that 55 mph did good, I suggest you read the stats. It did not reduce accidents. Accidents went up during that blast of brilliance by the peanut farmer turned president. Fuel consumption increased as well. READ the Statistics and weep. All it did was congest the highways and create unnecessary road rage.
As for high speed, I love it. I'm 63 and I've been driving since I was 13. However, high speed driving should be attempted by folks who have the skill to do it. Most don't because no one is taught to drive defensively. None of the high schools who teach driver's education will teach defensive driving skills that apply at both low and high speed. Although more education is certainly preferable to less education, teaching defensive driving in schools is not politically correct although it would save numerous lives. I learned my skills on the race track and I taught many of those skills to my 3 children. All became good drivers and good citizens without drug or alcohol use.
You are probably wondering about my driving habits. Right? I drive as fast as I feel it is safe to drive when I'm on the open road dependent on prevailing conditions. I've been known to exceed 150 under certain instances when in a vehicle that is capable. I pay little attention to posted speed. I typically match the traffic speed. If they are doing 90, then I drive 90. If they are doing 50 then I do 50. It's like a dance, folks. You must match your partner unless you WANT to look foolish and WANT to have an accident. I drive the speed limit in city limits. I stop fully for all stop signs. I never run a signal light. I ALWAYS signal when I change lanes. I have absolutely no patience with those who run stop signs. Most of the boring farm stock who insist on driving exactly on the speed limit (in the left lane) are the ones who drive right through the stop signs to make up for the wasted time they spent in the left lane of the freeway. I'm sorry; I just have little patience with stupid people.
Now, for some additional philosophy, think about this: If you drive faster on the freeway, when it's safe, you will reduce the time on the road and thereby reduce your chance of an accident. Less time on the road means the idiots have less time to crash into you. It's worked for me. Forty -four years of driving California freeways. No accidents. Let me repeat that. NO ACCIDENTS. That includes the operation of race cars, normal cars, 18 wheelers, and legal limit motor homes. Never jeopardized anyone else. No one has been able to collide with the rear end of MY vehicle. You have no idea how many accidents I've PREVENTED, literally, by being aware, using good driving skills, and generally avoiding the unskilled idiots who roam the California freeways. Works for me. If you disagree, post it. However, don't expect a response. I'll be in one of my cars going somewhere, FAST.

OMG, are there really people who drive the speed limit? Where are these people? I've rarely seen any, and when I have, they are usually going 10 miles an hour under the speed limit, hugging their steering wheel, and blocking the left lane!!!!!
And as far as speed traps go, there is one in a town near me, a well-known speed trap, (has even been investigated!), and the town paid for their new courthouse from the revenue from tickets. That's ridiculous! C'mon traffic, do some real police work!

I beleive that in some cases the speed limits are reasonable such as neighborhoods and other places where there might be unexpected foot traffic but certainly not on highways. If americans would just be more discaplined and not take their eyes off the road for more than a few seconds and have the common sense to slow down around a sharp curve there would be no speed related accidents other than people driving slow and getting in their way. move the hell over!!!! if you wanna go 45 or 50 in a 55 which could easily be a 70 then go right ahead... just dont complain when someone is riding your ass in the middle or left lane. Its not our fault you can't drive a car and sometimes i am really in a hurry. most people that go that fast know what they are doing and can handle a car. As for cops... why not go after agressive drivers instead of speeding ones. I saw a terrible accident caused by a speed trap because someone slammed on their breaks at the sight of the cops and got nailed from behind causing a huge traffic jam and bodily harm. Theres my two cents.

I have to admit I drive faster than the speed limit. But, I PAY ATTENTION to the other cars on the road and I'm NOT ON MY CELL PHONE. 90% of the drivers I pass are NOT PAYING ATTENTION to their driving, are are more dangerous than the drivers who are going faster than me. IF YOU WANT TO DRIVE.. PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD!!
DriverManApr 4th 2008 12:40AM
Just because I drive slow does not make me a better driver. I can close my eyes and drive below the speed limit, and not get a ticket. I must be a better driver since I'm going the speed limit.

Speeding is not the real problem, as long as it's reasonable. The reaction time from one person to to another is significant, in as in effect of what that said person is doing at the time, talking on the phone or paying attention to their driving. Any person out there may have an emergency situation that they are focused on, and the cause of the reason that they are speeding should be considered.
Someone that is talking on the cell phone, driving in the (left) passing lane and impeding traffic should very well be given a ticket. Once in awhile a person maybe headed to the hospital because of a family emergency and doing only 5 to 10 mph over the speed limit. Which is not crazy but substantial, and they encounter the IMPEDER. The two extremes meet, 10 mph under and clueless, and the 10 mph over and in a hurry. The speed limit is 55 and the difference in speed is nearly half the speed limit.
You decide who is more at fault. The idiot who thinks he is more important than anyone else or the idiot who is thinking of "racing" to the emergency of a loved one? The real question is who is paying more attention than the other? This is where the reaction time of different individuals comes into effect. Also road rage will play into this equation.
Bottom line, the slow poke, not paying attention, talking on the cell phone, driving in the passing lane is the real problem.
Why do you think there are signs that state "KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS".

So what? If people want to speed, let them. This is an awesome free country, right? If the speeding results in death, then so be it. We've overpopulated the world because we went against nature. We went against SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. Half of these people aren't even supposed to be alive because they weren't supposed to survive. Death is just part of life, and as it sucks to lose someone we love, we just have to remember that it's life. May seem a bit harsh but, my uncle just died Monday and I love him and can still say these things knowing that it's the truth. Not to mention that most of the speed limits are too low anyways. Especially here in the United States, the most free country of them all.
