Circuit City Botches GPS Install, $12k in Damages, Won't Pay Up
For most GPS systems, installation is as simple as sticking a suction cup on the windshield or an adhesive disc on the dash, plugging in an adapter to the cigarette lighter, and hitting the power button. But, if you want something a little more flush and integrated, you have to go with a device installed in your dash. Unless you're the adventuresome type and know what you're doing, dashboard installation is usually a task best left to the professionals. We say "usually" because we've come across a case where paying someone else to do the install was plainly the wrong call, resulting in $12,119 in damages to a 2007 Honda Civic Si.
The woefully bad install job was done at a local Circuit City store, where "qualified" technicians were attempting to install an AVIC-Z2. The installer proceeded to cut the wiring harness from the stock stereo, twist and solder together a new one, drill holes in the heating system, scratch up the front windshield, and crack all the plastic panels surrounding the thing. Sounds to us like the guy who tried to install his home satellite system with a .22 pistol could have done a better job. The install is so bad that the local Honda dealership won't release the car, saying all the shorted wires are a fire hazard.
The most irritating part of the story is that Circuit City isn't ponying up for the damages. To date, the electronics retailer has only paid $3,190, about a quarter of the total damages, and is forcing the victim in question to deal directly with his insurance company rather than just cutting him a check. That is some seriously bad customer service, which we hope will be rectified soon in light of the atrocious publicity this installation-fiasco is generating for the chain.

We bought a computer with warranty there many years ago. This was supposed to be a FULL coverage warranty where you could just walk in and get a new computer if there was a problem. Not only did they refuse to replace our computer, but they "repaired" it several times til we just gave up. Needless to say, we never shopped there again.

A HONDA CIVC ISN'T WORTH $12,000. WHAT'S UP WITH THIS STORY? CIRCUIT CITY DEFINITELY SUCKS THE BIG ROOT, BUT IS THIS REALLY NEWS WORTHY?

Hey, JP, when you screw up electrical work and have to replace the heating unit because of holes drilled in it, you are talking 5 g in parts, not to mention, Honda is going to be pricy for the labor. I would take it to the dealer also, because it is too new of a car. Don't screw up the car and you won't pay out the rear for labor!

I had a bad experience with Circuit City a few years ago, complained to the corporate office, and never heard back. I throw away their ads without even looking at them, and would NEVER go into another Circuit City again!

They're going under and could care less. CC will be history in less than 3 years.

I tried to buy a laptop, every sunday morning for over a month, each time i was told ( I need to be at store on sunday, about 3:00am ) not during the christmas crazyness i may add. I would get up, go to the store at opening hour, to find no computers were there , always I was upgraded to a model twice as much as the one listed, I hate even hearing about this retailer, !!

I use to work for CC about 12 yrs ago. At the time, the company spent a lot of money on a product called Divx. In short, the customer had to purchase a divx/dvd player. You could purchse a divx movie for around $4. The movie would play up to 3 times. After the 3rd viewing, you had the option to purchase the movie for the regular price of a dvd. Smart huh? NO! We were told that Circuit City invested a lot of money in this product, and if it failed, so would the company! Well guess what...divx failed. Sorry to be so wordy, thanks for listening.

Thank goodness I did not have them install a Blue-Tooth handfree Motorola unit in Rancho Cucamonga. I bought the unit @ a Verizon store, with a logo stating that I should go to a Circuit City store for
installation. It cost more to install the unit than what the unit cost me. I returned the unit back to Verizon. My wife will have to use an ear unit. When I was at Circuit City, the place had young people who could not give me the answers I needed. There did seem like there was alot of fooling around in the background. My previous experience with Circuit City was when I went there years ago with my mom to buy a refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, stove, and dishwasher. Alot of appliances, right? Well, the 3 salespeople (2 men, 1 woman) seemed more interested in talking with each other and not help me out. So, I went to Sears, and guess what? Sears got my business.

Bought a Sony computer at OuterLoop LouKy CC and Windows was bad but Manager wouldn't take it back since software wasn't warranteed so called Corporate and while waiting for live rep, I about died when their TV woman asked me if I was married, then asked if I thought would be good idea if she should move in and get pregnant by bf just so he'd marry her, like WTF???--Corporate took Sony back. Right afterwards, a neighbor had an alarm system put in and car was vandalized after midnight. A couple of kids heard a chirp and saw vandal get in so called neighbor, turns out vandal was CC. Their salespeople are classic ID's, meaning they read the tag but that's it. 15% restocking fee too.

I had an installation done by Best Buy. What should have taken 4 hours ended up finishing off 9 hours later. Then, as its rolled out of their bay, and I get into it, I realize the brakes seem really stiff and the car is now sputtering. I call the installer over, advise of him of the situation, and he agress, statin " I thought it felt a little bit wierd". ...WHat happened was that he drilled a hole in the booster, which regulated all of the pressure. I thought he fixed it, but a day later, I realized it had become much worse. Best Buy handled it all, covering the $600 worth of damage, AND rented me a Mustang Convertible. Thanks Best Buy...Now fire that employee, and were even:)

Yeah, Circuit City seems to have a bad reputation everywhere. Rude sales associates, bad service, and too strict return policies all seem to be the norm for them. Seems only fitting that they would be stupid about admitting that they made a mistake and pay for the damages. Hope this turns out okay for their latest victim.

Circuit City jacked my car up a couple years ago, too. I was having them install a stereo and they didn't do it correctly. Everytime I went over a bump or touched the inside panel of my car it would make this really high pitched noise, enough to make my ears hurt. I took it back in the very next day and they took my stereo out and wanted to send it to the manufacturer to have it repaired and they wouldnt even replace the thing for me. I ended up bringing it to Good Guys and they fixed everything, too bad they are closed now.

Why would anyone have Circuit City install ANYTHING????????????

I worked for a Nissan dealership several years ago where the service manager made it his mission to hire and/or train the best technicians around. At that time Nissan had approx. 15,000 factory certified technicians within the U.S. Of those roughly 400 had achieved the level of Master Technician. There were only 80 or so Masters in the entire Southeast of which 7 worked in my shop. You would have been hard pressed to find better repairs or customer satisfaction anyway. And while our salaries reflected our professionism I'm told we still produced a 35% profit rate.
Then the owner hired a new General Manager who promised 37%. First he cut everyone's salary by $1.50 per hr sighting the poor economy and promising the cut was a temporary measure. The he killed the Christmas bonus plan and company paid health insurance. Slowly he forced the good mechanics to move to other dealers in order to reduce his overhead. His theory was to keep only one or two properly trained personel to handle the really challenging jobs and fill the shop with trainees from the local technicial school to handle the everyday repairs.
Seldom did a month go by when some trainee's rookie mistake did cause as much as $5,000 damages to some unlucky customer's vehicle. Still when you're charging the customer $72 per hr. for labor but only paying some clown $9 per hr. for the work you can afford the inevitable mishaps. Simple "Management Mathematic" ... apparently Circuit City has adopted this same philosophy.

Not all CC stores are the same. I used to work for them and my store was great. Yes you do get the occasional person who isn't in a good mood, but think about how many hundreds of bad customers they get and still have to be nice to the others. Most people don't give a crap about the associates and treat them like crap. There is always two sides to the story people. Think about it....
