Baby Names Being Derived from...Text Messaging?

Seems utterly absurd, but there's apparently a trend among those in the SMS generation of using abbreviated versions of traditional Christian names on their children's birth certificates -- along with "original" ways of spelling them.
Anne has been changed to An, Connor to Conna and Laura to Lora -- all, seemingly, for the sake of convenience. According to the online parenting club Bounty, there's also been quite a bit of borrowing from corporate entities: One girl born last month was born Flicity, along with other recent names like Ikea, Paprica, Caramel, Bambi, Fire-Lily, Skylark and TAME -- which apparently stands for The Apple of My Eye.
Albert Mehrabian is a psychology professor at the University of California, and has researched the impact of irregular names. He found that "less attractive characteristics were attributed to individuals with less conventionally spelled names. Unconventional spelling connoted less masculinity for men and less femininity for women [and] more anxiety and neuroticism were attributed to those with less common names."
These attempts aren't always successful, however: Last year a couple was told they wouldn't be allowed to register their son's name as 4Real. Officials in New Zealand apparently ruled that the use of a number made it inappropriate, so the couple went with their second choice....
...Superman.

My parents named me Christa Andrew (a family name), with the intention of calling me Dru. But my 18-month-old brother's lingo turned it into Ambru. Fearing 'Ambru' might stick, my Mom talked him into calling me 'Andi' and that has been with me ever since. Once, when telling that story at a party, a lady told me that her 2-year old brother had changed her name, 'Edith' to Edick. Her mother quickly nicknamed her 'Dickie' and, at 55, she was still being called 'Dickie'. Sometimes things don't work out like parents plan.

Regardless of what you choose to name your child, keep in mind they have to go through their entire life with your decision. Choose wisely.

Auntie of Gay BrendaApr 7th 2008 4:27PM
My sister named her son Brendan, and his friends couldn't pronounce it correctly as children, and called him BRENDA. He's now 13 and he's still Brenda... and he is also quite gay. Was it in his DNA or was it his name that determined his sexuality?

I went to school with a girl named Leatha Thweet. Sounds like you're speaking with a LISP whenever you say her name! heehee!

I actually know of a woman that named her daughter clamadia. She spelled it different, but "thought it sounded pretty". Some peoples kids... I tell ya...

@Carol
Heh, hippies. "Morning Star"? Come on.
Star is nice. "Morning Star" is pushing it. Chances are, when you've got a name which is two separate words (i.e. not a makeshift compound word--no hyphens), you're going to look like something of a fool.
Gotta be careful when you're swinging around those adjectives (and similar) like that. Wouldn't want to hurt English, now, would you?

I named both of my sons after their grandparents...first the paternal side and then the maternal side. This bought me good will to name the rest of them without interference, so of course I didn't have any more...But as far as I know Thomas Anthony and Joseph Arthur Frederick are doing just fine. With their names anyway.

My cousin named her daughter after her husbands name...just backwards...D'lorah...I thought that was cute. If I name my kid after his fathers name backwards it would esoj..not as pretty :)
