Chrysler to Offer Wireless Internet Access In Its Cars
Chrysler is looking to pick up its sagging sales by being the first to offer in-car Internet access in the U.S. Later this year, an unspecified mobile broadband (read: cellular data) radio will be offered as an option on Chrysler vehicles, with the goal of making it standard on all of the company's cars down the road. Inside the new cars, a Wi-Fi router will be installed to allow any Wi-Fi-enabled device to take advantage of the connection. That means no wasting your cell phone battery or messing with add-on cards to get your laptop online from the road. You'd simply connect to the car's Wi-Fi as you would to your home network.
At least initially, charges for a cellular data plan will apply.

They wanna boost sales? Here's a suggestion: How about putting some vehicles out there that get high mpg. I've been waiting for them to put a high mileage diesel in one of their passenger cars. A boost in quality wouldn't hurt either.

And you think driving while texting is bad??!!! Can you connect while the engine is still running? Or does the car at least have to be in park? If this can be accessed while the car is in motion, I can see exactly what is coming next..........

Enough already....REALLY BAD idea.....The roadways are crazy enough with the cell phone usage, texting while driving, reading the news papers and magazine just to name a few of the things I see everyday in Atlanta GA and now Wireless Computers in Vehicles....The car companies must want us all to have accidents and total or vehicles so we will have to purchase a new one more quickly...If all car companies adopt this idea in the future I guess I will take to the roads on my Schwinn Bike.....

Just what we need, people playing games on their lap top while driving. Thats a good idea for the body shops and undertakers. They should benefit from this idea. How about making a nice car that can get 60 plus MPG. You know you can do it. just stop flirting with the oil companies and combat their prices. Maybe you would be making billions of dollars profit instead of the oil companies.

I think it's great. Whenever we want to leave early on a family trip, there is always one more thing my husband "Has" to finish. Cell phones help, I drive the first 3 hrs, he works the phones. I'd drive all 6 hours if he would have cell and wi-fi! Sure beats sitting in traffic.

its waynes world for me
JTLT @ Mar 25th 2008 7:39AM
Gees - they don't even want you talking on your cell phone while driving... but they'll now let you access the Internet while driving... nice.
sandra @ Mar 25th 2008 7:51AM
Yes, I agree with the one who wrote, "good for body shops and funeral directors" when wi-fi is installed in cars. I personally see clients who's loved one crashed and died while texting on a cell phone. Others were trying to follow directions by GPS and were told to turn down a one way street! I'm old fashioned, give me a map and a Volkswagon hippie van, VW has the capability to build 60mpg vehicles because they did it during the Nazi reign when Hitler needed vehicles that could run to remote places in Germany! I foresee a depression if oil companies and car companies don't start caring about our environment and that 90 percent of people can't afford a car higher than 13k. Sorry Chrysler, Ford, etc thats the reality of it all! Smaller cars would be safer too if it were made out of steel and not fiberglass!

Great, so I can get wireless internet for my car but can't get broadband or dsl for my home.
goldenchildkb27 @ Mar 25th 2008 8:40AM
I think this is a great idea...for the passengers in the car. i dont think the drivers should be allowed to use it. It would be awesome though for long car trips. I really dont think its gonna boost the car sales, but you always get some people that will.
steve bales @ Mar 25th 2008 8:45AM
I guess it gives a way to call the mechanic when your brand new chrysler is broke down and gives you something to do while you wait. I think i'll pass still on buying a new chrysler.they haven't been considered a car since the 60's
but just my oppinion maybe others like them, but if they do let me ask this why are there so many 07 chargers and 300m's on used car lots already?????
r bearfield @ Mar 25th 2008 8:59AM
forget about that idea, all you need is the driver on the internet, and please don't tell me they won't do it.
just make the car safer and get better gas milage.
note-- chrysler corp. "you can't fix stupid" and if you do this, you are.
Janelle @ Mar 25th 2008 9:06AM
I knew there was a reason I never bought a Chrysler. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. I'm sure other makers will follow suit. It appears that actually DRIVING your vehicle is around No. 6 on the list of what to do while behind the wheel of a car. Incredible.
rochesterhodge @ Mar 25th 2008 9:06AM
There really should be a law ending this stupidity. There is NO REASON that ANYONE needs to be looking at their e-mail while driving a car. If they want to install this, then a safety device dissabiling the car from moving while it is in use, should be installed. ENOUGH with the need for 24/7 access to the internet. Bad enough with the cell phoners testing while they drive. Another thing that should be outlawed. Please, hit me so I can sue you for every dime you ever had or will have!
Laura @ Mar 25th 2008 9:10AM
So many people don't take driving seriously already. Let's just give them another reason to have their minds on anything except driving. Somewhere along the line people have forgotten that vehicles can kill....
rochesterhodge @ Mar 25th 2008 9:14AM
Here's one for you. Just went into the Chrysler official web site. Guess what? They do not take e-mail contacts, they make you use the phone! Ain't they cute? Place devices in the car that can cause someone to kill me because they are not paying attention to driving, but hey, it won't be while they were on line to the manufacturer, 'cause you can't get to them that way!
teemglf @ Mar 25th 2008 9:17AM
Ok lets boost sales. Make a small car put a diesel engine in it which gets 70 mpg. Watch what happens when volkswagen brings in there car the polo diesel at 70 miles per gallon. If 65% of new car sales in europe are diesel because they are 35% more efficent than gas dont that tell chrysler somethin. HELLO HELLO HELLO IS THERE AYBODY IN THERE>
