New Coaster Offers Riders Digital Video Replays
The digital camera has become just as much of a staple on the modern roller coaster as the safety bar and the faint, lingering smell of vomit. Digicams are often hidden at the scariest parts of the ride to snap pics of the terrified riders and, occasionally, the bare chests of the more exhibitionist ones. Now, a new coaster opening next year at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida plans to roller coaster voyeurism that to the next generation, offering downloadable full-motion replays.
The coaster, called Rockit, will feature lots of high tech accoutrements including pulsating LEDs, digital video displays, and all sorts of flash and flare to catch the attention of the so-called "YouTube Generation". And, of course, there will be plenty of loops, dips, and dives for the more traditionalist thrill-seekers. At the end of the ride, passengers who can still see straight will be given the option of downloading the video replay, complete with a customizable music soundtrack.
There's no mention in the announcement of just how the videos will be downloaded or what the clips will cost, but given the generally exorbitant fees theme parks tend to charge for a crummy print of a low-res digital pic of your screaming mug, we're inclined to think it's not going to be cheap.
