In-Flight Cell Phone Calls Now Allowed On Emirates
We've all heard the myths and rumors surrounding midair cell phone use; about how accidentally leaving your phone on while on a flight could result in you and every other person aboard plunging to their doom. Whether or not those conceptions are well-founded, they've been used as excuses to ban midair cell phone calls on pretty much every airline in the world -- until now. At last, certain flights on Emirates Airways are allowing passengers to officially get their calls and texts on.
The first fully authorized calls were made on a flight between Dubai and Casablanca, letting passengers annoy their plane-mates with inane conversations about how weird it is to be talking on a cell phone on a flight. To keep the annoyance to a minimum, Emirates flight crews advised passengers to put their phones on silent mode and keep the volume down. Those warnings tend to be wholly ineffective in curbing rude cell phone behavior in movie theaters, but since flying is a somewhat riskier proposition than film viewing, here's hoping people listen a little more closely.

Just because you have noone who cares about you or you care about noone then tough DAVID. Stick a finger in your ear so you don't have to listen to them, or ride a bus.

Please do not allow this on U.S. flights. I won't fly any airline that allows these dullards to prattle on about nothing at foghorn decibel levels during a flight.
jcroninMar 23rd 2008 2:07PM
cell phones usually dont work above 10,000 feet unless technology is added in to allow this, but not totally sure on this since the older analog phones use frequency modulation. But unless someone on the airlines oks this not planning to use mine on flight

I am with all those who are AGAINST it. Please, isn't there a safe haven anywhere from these cell phone junkies. Enough already! What is so important that you can't be away from your phone? Listen up once and for all. We are NOT INTERESTED or impressed with last minute wheeling and dealing, personal drama, what you're making for dinner, what you are wearing, etc. You are BORING us to tears. Get over yourselves. I will do my part to make it unpleasant for anyone near me using a cell phon during a flight. Why don't you bring a book to read or something if you don't like the movie or they are not showing one. As for the person who said they rather someone speak on the phone than have to spk with someone they don't know, I have no problem telling them to leave me the h*ll alone and speak with someone else.

I'm officially boycotting Emirates airline. No, I've never flown them and wasn't planning on ever flying them, but they are so boycotted now. :-)
In addition to the singing idea, I think we should all carry children's toy cell phones that we can pull out and start mocking the exhibitionists on their cell phones. "Yeah, hi Roberto, it's me, Scooter. I'm on a plane, can you believe it??? Yeah, and it's my birthday! I'm 42, yeee hawww. What's that, you want to sing to me? Heck yeah, I'll sing along. Sorry you have a cell phone from the 80s, I'll try to talk EVEN LOUDER!!! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW??? WHOOHOOOOO"
Oh man, this is a sure sign of the apocalypse.

Wow, most of you are certainly much more self absorbed than the folks that you are pre-emptively complaining about. "What about me??" seems to be the prevalent theme running here. Huh. Never criticize till you've walked a mile in their shoes, someone may have illness or have died or some such other, not just talking to while away the time. Happy Easter all.

If stateside airlines allow the use of cellphones, then the next thing you know they will be selling earplugs on the flight.......and I'll be buying...
JamesMar 23rd 2008 8:19PM
THAT'LL CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANYTHING. 2 REAL IMPORTANT PEOPLE SITTING NEXT TO ME JABBERING AWAY ABOUT NOTHING...2 PHONES ARE GOING TO BE SMASHED. I'VE GOT THE SIZE AND TEMPERMENT TO DO IT. I'LL BUY YOU A NEW PHONE AS SOON AS WE LAND. I CAN AFFORD IT, AND ANY CRIMINAL DEFENSE CHARGES YOU WANT TO BRING. BEWARE THE THE LAWSUIT COMING FOR YOU...INVASION OF MY PRIVACY.

OH YEAH! A PLANE FULL OF ETHNIC DIVERSITY ALL SPEAKING THIER NATIVE TONGUE...ARABIC, FRENCH, ITALIAN, SPANISH, EBONICS, WHATEVER. THERE'LL BE A FIGHT IN EVERY AISLE
RayMar 24th 2008 6:29AM
I think this is misguided as it is going to be abused by people who cannot do without talking on the phone. Brace yourself for a alot of fights on flights where cell phone use is allowed.

'Emirates' sounds like it'll be the preferred airline that jihadist pilots can train on while taking calls from Osama bin Laden?
debMar 24th 2008 7:12AM
I love your comment David B. I agree completely, it annoys the crap out of me when asses on an airplane do that. My husband is a doctor and at times I am mortified when he takes a call at a restaurant or in another public place. He is considerate and will go outside...........

CELL PHONE IS LIKE A DRUG. IS PARY OF A OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER.
richardMar 24th 2008 8:04AM
common sense has prevailed thus far.
this will inspire rage onboard. rightly so.
on the ground these types of individuals are intollerable. of course it should not be allowed.

If all airlines are following suit, all I can say is that they better had start offering noncell phone flights. Put all the obnoxious cell phone users on their own flight and let the rest of us fly in peace. Just see how full the non cellphone flights are compared to the ones that allow them. I think the airlines will very quickly see the error of their ways.
MichaelMar 24th 2008 7:59AM
I HATE this idea....Any Airline that allows Cell Phone calls on the flight will NEVER get my business.....Who wants to listen to your neighbor talking the entire flight...NOT ME...Are you listening Airlines to all these negative comments....The majority of the public does not want this...
DJMar 24th 2008 8:10AM
NOBODY is that important that they have to receive/make calls 30,000 feet in the air.
This is a huge mistake.
