In-Flight Cell Phone Calls Now Allowed On Emirates
We've all heard the myths and rumors surrounding midair cell phone use; about how accidentally leaving your phone on while on a flight could result in you and every other person aboard plunging to their doom. Whether or not those conceptions are well-founded, they've been used as excuses to ban midair cell phone calls on pretty much every airline in the world -- until now. At last, certain flights on Emirates Airways are allowing passengers to officially get their calls and texts on.
The first fully authorized calls were made on a flight between Dubai and Casablanca, letting passengers annoy their plane-mates with inane conversations about how weird it is to be talking on a cell phone on a flight. To keep the annoyance to a minimum, Emirates flight crews advised passengers to put their phones on silent mode and keep the volume down. Those warnings tend to be wholly ineffective in curbing rude cell phone behavior in movie theaters, but since flying is a somewhat riskier proposition than film viewing, here's hoping people listen a little more closely.

I have slowly gone from a 40 flights a year guy to about a dozen since 9/11. I am on my way to eliminating flying altogether. We can add cell phones to rotten service, rude employees who hate their jobs, reclining seats when there's no leg room to begin with and the increasing unreliability of flight schedules to all the reasons to vacation near home from now on. I do have an idea, though. Remember the smoking section in the back of the plane? Charge cell phone users, say, $5 per 100 air miles, and then put them all in the back of the plane. They can get into shouting matches back there.

oh no, this is not a good thing. It's bad
enough to listen to all those people who
can't stop talking on their phones while
waiting for your flight. Now, we have to
listen to those morons with no way of
getting away from them? NO NO NO...

My husband is in the Navy and is stationed in Virginia. Son and I live in FL. At some point one or both of us are flying once a month if not more back and forth to visit. If cell phones are used on planes I will stop flying. I do not want to sit next to someone who is yammering on the whole flight. It's bad enough when you get parents flying with children that are kicking the back of the seat, jumping in the seat so that you can't put anything on the tray or just in general being loud while the parent ignores them. Now the airlines want to allow a whole new way to annoy the customers that they have shoved into a sardine can!!!

I say amen to a previous comment made by Kathy,if talking on your cell while in flight will keep them from talking to me then I hope all flights allow it. I dont know you,I will never see you again so please, even moreso when you see me close my eyes, dont start a conversation with me! I'm traveling to go somewhere not meet new people.

I love it when folks say "I'm never flying XYZ airline again". I hear that phrase at least three to four times a week at the airport and its always about a different airline each time. Yep, sure they won't....until orbitz or travelocity puts them on that same airline for a dirt cheap fare. I'm kind of thinking the same thing applies here to everyone saying they won't fly such and such airline because they actually use cell phones. I'd love nothing more then to see all these anti-cellphone people put their money where their mouth is, and pay higher fares to avoid cellphone carriers, but that won't happen. Most passengers try to pay bottom dollar to fly and besides, last time I looked, the cellphone industry hasn't lost a combined 45 billion dollars since Sep 2001 like the airlines have. Judging by profits from the cell phone heavyweights, there must be some people out who don't mind using cellphones. The airlines are trying to add a perk to business travelers, which is where their profits come from. Can you blame them?

Bravo. You have expressed my feelings and those of the vast majority of courteous people eloquently.

IS THERE NO PEACE??
Everywhere you go and any way you turn someone has a cell phone screwed into their ear and are running their mouths!
It makes no difference where you are. I can think of nothing more sick than going in a public restroom and having someone taking a piss with his dick in one hand and a CELL PHONE IN THE OTHER!
Then as if that isn't enough, they leave without even washing their hands. How is it, that now EVERYONE IN THIS WORLD IS SO IMPORTANT each minute of every day that they can't live without a cell phone?

My guess Raymond is because after you land, the acft is done flying and only needs to taxi to the gate. On the other hand, before a flight when the door closes, the flight crew is assuring the cabin is ready for departure, everyone is seated, belts fastened, ect. Part of that is making sure all electronic devices are powered down. Because once the flight attendants let the pilots know the cabin is ready, it may be a very quick taxi to the departing runway. Last thing pilots or air traffic controllers want to do is wait to get the acft to takeoff because someone still left their i-pod running on the taxi out. The flight crews are suppose to take care of it at the gate to assure no delays for cabin problems in front of the runway.

I hope this doesn't start a trend. I can avoid one airline but I can't avoid flying altogether. I don't know why people think they have to raise their voice to be heard on the phone but they do and the last thing I want to endure on a flight is a bunch of people screaming into their cell phones. Not to mention all of those obnoxious ringtones.

Ray Ahead says: Quit your bitching and DRIVE if you don't like it!
I ask Ray Ahead: Ray, tell me where I can get a ROAD MAP from Hawaii to Paris, France. I'd buy one if you can tell where to get it!

I do not need to know what your gynocologist told you or what you sold your stock for or like anything else like!!!!!!
If cells are allowed on planes, there should be a sound proof area where users may go and shout into their phones without disturbing readers.

I think that texting is fine. But it is the volume of the speaker's voice that needs to be controlled, not the volume of the phone. I sat next to someone who talked all the while we were waiting to take off. I couldn't wait for the cell phones to be turned off. Can you imagine sitting between 2 people talking on their cells? I shudder to think. If there is only one airline that doesn't allow it, that's the one I'm taking.
CindyMar 24th 2008 8:19PM
I also will not fly an airline that allows cell phones. A year ago I was at a favorite resturant. A woman next to us was discussing her recent colonoscopy, no holds barred. From prep to procedure..then she put her husband on to discuss his.
I did have the option to leave or move. On a plane that is difficult.
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!

" Hi ...ya .....i m on the jet."....Rest assured , if i can here that on a jet , im taking another airline.

Ray Ahead, you are one of the self centered idiots that everyone is complaining about on here! People who blab on and on in the mall, in the car, right until the plane leaves the ground, and right when it pulls up to the terminal. I will not fly on any airline that allows cell phones in flight. I agree with David all the way!
