Suicide Robot Kills Man In Driveway

In news that can only be described as utterly apocalyptic, an 81-year-old Australian Gold Coast resident has killed himself -- with an elaborate suicide robot, built using plans downloaded from the Internet. The man spent hours searching the Web for a way to go; then, after finding what he wanted, downloaded what he needed and built a remote firing mechanism for a gun.
He set the device up in his driveway (pictured, above), placed himself in front of it, and set the machine to kill; the machine was attached to a .22 semi-automatic pistol, which promptly fired multiple shots into the man's head.
The man apparently lived alone, and left notes of his plans and thoughts as he struggled to come to terms with relatives' demands to move out of his home and into care.
Which, apparently, didn't seem all that appealing to him.

Well in the long run his "family" got what they wanted ..his home..his money. Just now going thru this with a MIL that married this illegal she was 85 he is 60. Married her to get a green card after she was declared incompentent, took her out of a great retirement home, he wanted her money and her Cassa. 6 Months later she is dead. Our seniors have no rights it appears. If people want your money and homes they can just slam you into a rst home ,take what you worked for and live guilt free or just leave you lay on the floor and make sure you die from that heart attack .

I think 81 yrs was too young to consider a nursing home. This guy apparently still felt that he was capable of caring for himself. Sometimes old folks just CAN'T care for themselves any longer. Hygene issues, health issues, alheimer's, and/or mobility issues all come into the equation. It's sad, but sometimes there's just no other choice but a nursing home.

FIRST OF ALL I THINK SOME OF YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN AAOUT THE AUTHOR.WE DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE WHY THAT COMMENT CAME OUT THE WAY IT DID.MAYBE HE DID IT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THAT DISCUSTING FAMILY.I HAVE WORKED AS A PRIVATE DUTY NURSE FOR 25 YEARS AND HAVE SEEN SITUATIONS THAT HAVE BROUGHT ME TO TEARS.THIS POOR MAN DID HAVE OPTIONS.AS MANY OF YOU SAID HE WAS ALERT AND SMART ENOUGH TO BUILT THIS DAMM ROBOT.THERE IS MUCH MORE HERE THAN WE KNOW RIGHT NOW.HIS RESEARCH TO KILL HIMSELF WAS DRIVEN BY MUCH ANGER AND DEEP EMOTIONS BECAUSE HE WAS SENDING SOMEONE A MESSAGE LOUD AND CLEAR.AFTER BEING SHOT LIKE THAT AT CLOSE RANGE YOU CAN IMAGINE WHAT HE MAY OF LOOKED LIKE.SOMEONE IN HIS FAMILY WOULD HAVE TO IDENTIFY HIM.NO, I DO NOT THINK HE WAS JUST SUICIDAL BUT ALSO AVENGEFUL.IT'S SAD ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT.

I refused to put my mother in a nursing home even though my sister (Power of Attorney) was desperately trying to do so to get her money. Thank God for the doctors, who allowed me to bring her home in her final days. Although it was painful and something I never will forget, the last moments of her life she was not alone and I was there by her bedside when she passed. I wanted her last days to be spent in comfort and a place that she loved and was familiar to her. And, as difficult as those last days were, I would do it again. After she died my sister kicked me out of the house and took everything of worth. Fortunately, my ex helped me to move and I relocated to another state.

People here are attacking the writer for his statement: "Which, apparently, didn't seem all that appealing to him."
I think that the statement was not snide, crass, or inconsiderate at all, but just the opposite! He felt for this man who killed himself partly because of his horror of living in elderly care. He wanted this man to not have died in vane....to make a statement to point out that something needs to be done to make the care homes better so this does not keep happening! Very thoughtful and helpfull really. Some just don't get it and want to blame the messenger instead of face reality of the problem!

To Shamoon; YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!! Apparently an unfeeling one at that. My mum & uncle both agreed that when the time came that their parents could no longer live on their own, since they were divorced, my uncle would have grandpa live with his family & my mum would have my grammy live with her. My grammy moved in with my mum 15 yrs ago, not because she could no longer care for herself, but because she was lonely living on her own. My daughter & I also moved at the same time. My daughter was 9 & had the benefit & pleasure of living with her grandma & great-grandma. Now my 2 yr old granddaughter is lucky enough to be living with them as well. Cherish our seniors before they're gone!!!

I think the story is slanted and you do not know if this man had dementia, if they were trying to get him into assisted living, or if he was a danger to himself (gee, ya think?) everyone is condemning the family when you don't really know the situation. I am trying to get my MIL to move near me but she does not want to leave her home. U understand her feelings and we are trying to help her stay independent as long as possible. I am afraid she will get hurt. I laugh when you say they want to put him in a nursing home and take his money. Nursing homes are $5,000 dollars a month. The money from the estate goes to pay for care. It is very expensive to care for people who can no longer care for themselves. Yes, I would take my MIL in but I cannot insert a feeding tube, I cannot administer medications, I am not a nurse or qualified. I can get in home care to a point, then I need help.....don't judge until you know the facts. This writer, obviously, goes light on the facts and high on the misguided humor.

I'm sure the anti-gun liberals will blame guns or the NRA for this. Of course he could have built a guillotine and triggered a remote control to drop the blade. Anti-gun liberals would still find a way to blame guns or the NRA.

OK.. I thought the reason you put someone in a home is because they are unable to take care of themselves. This guy researched on the internet, ALOT, ordered & purchased DIRECTIONS, successfully assembled the mechanical device, and accomplished a very well thought out (you get the point) plan. Im thinking he wasnt a candidate for the home in the first place.

I don't usually go through the trouble of posting comments to stories, but the author of this one just could not resist adding that last sentence.
He ought to be >B> FIRED for that remark.
Look, I believe people are way too sensitive nowadays. The PC pendulum has swung way too far to the right. But THIS is insensitive and inappropriate.
This is a NEWS story; not a comedy skit, you idiot.

Apparently, Australia treats their elderly just as crappy as we do here in America. Some countries take care of their elderly, for instance Asian countries like Japan. They don't rip off their money, and stuff them into smelly old folks homes, like we are fond of doing here, and apparently Australia. It's sad. Remember, we all get old, or die trying.

Tdora, I like what you wrote, & how you wrote it. After giving it some more thought, I'm in agreement with you.

After reading page after page of people's comments, I feel all sides have valid points, except for the man's family members. I am trying to see their side or their point of view, but I just can't.
MarkMar 21st 2008 6:30PM
I've nothing but sympathy for the man's plight. Perhaps his family was convinced it was time for the nursing home, and he simply chose to exit this life on his own terms, rather than leave it to the whim of some paid caregiver. I don't condone suicide, but I absolutely abhor the so-called "miracles" of modern medicine that extend a life far beyond it's natural and dignified conclusion. We are born, we live, we die. So it has always been on Earth and so it shall always be.
RichMar 21st 2008 9:16PM
Wow, I think most of these comments are really missing the mark. When someone sadly finds it necessary to put a loved one in a home they are pretty much giving up any chance of getting an inheritance, not taking their inheritance. The government would take every last penny of this poor gents money before they would start kicking in towards the high cost of care. At the cost of 24 hour care these days, the money would evaporate quickly and would almost surely be gone by the time he passed on to a better place. Maybe he took his life so that he could leave some of his hard earned money to his children rather than see all of his hard work evaporate away in a matter of months. I love my children and help them out whenever I can in these tough times. I would like to think he did it out of love, not to torture them with guilt. None of us know what really happened but that's my take on it.

i work in the field of long term facilities, & NEVER have found any evidence of wrongdoing to residents by staff!!
if i did, as a matter of fact, if you ever do, there is a phone number posted in every facility to ensure the safety of the residents
Did anyone ever call that number???
it's your duty, & mine to keep them safe!!!
this poor man was indeed tormented, probably more from his family, & did the only thing he thought available to him. Since we can't use Kavorkian, many are going the same way!
jjMar 23rd 2008 3:48PM
anybody that is smart enough to research the net and find out how to build a suicide robot isnt all that stupid .. but he was sure dumb enough to kill himself
JoJoMar 25th 2008 2:56PM
SHAME on the relatives of this poor man. He obviously had the brain capacity to go online and get instructions to build a working robot. Sounds to me like a bunch of greedy relatives wanting that house to sell and divvy up the money.
I cannot begin to fathom the grief and disappointment that this man must have felt by the treatment of his OWN FLESH AND BLOOD!! If that man were truly wise, he would have sought out an attorney removing ALL of them from his will. Irony would be his deeding his entire estate over to some charitable cause that supports the rights of the elderly.
I hope that the outcome of this horrible event has caused his relatives to become social pariahs. I strongly believe in "what goes around, comes around", so all I can all do is hope that Karma does her thing one hundred fold to these people!

Jason says:
I call BS, another crap article by AOL. Where does one find the kind of technology to make something like that. Certainly not on the internet. If such a thing existed it would be owned by the military.

No need to call BS. You can download instructions how to make a bomb or other types of weapons. Virtually anything you can think of can be found. Sheesh!
