The PC guy from the Mac vs. PC ads would love this...
In addition to problems with iPods, the people at Apple might need to worry about its PowerBook AC adapters. Last summer, a head writer for 'David Letterman' had his adapter produce smoke and sparks. Rather than disconnect it, he videotaped it happening again. Whether it was for the sake of comedy or safety, we've all been warned.

All of those adapters will do that after a while. Mine have.

It looks to me that the adapter's power cord was shorting (the sparks), causing excessive current draw which in turn creates heat that melts the wire (the smoke). This is caused by one of two events-- one, the user of the device had kinked, twisted, or otherwise abused the cable to where the inner insulation between the enclosed wires was compromised, or the power adapter itself drew enough current to cause the wires to heat up, melting the inner insulation, causing a short. Whichever the case, it is poor engineering on the behalf of the engineers of Macintosh Inc. Stronger outer insulation (to prevent damage to the enclosed wires) coupled with thiker guage wires (to allow higer current and produce less heat) would eliminate this problem.

I think i fhe stopped twisting the cord it might not have ever happened. He kept twisting it until it almost fell apart and ia m sure he did the same thing before they started taping, any one can see what he did!

These Macbook adaptors come with 'wings' that fold out and allow the cord to be wrapped around them, for handy carrying. Simply wrapping the cord up per manufacturer's instructions is bad for the wire and causes this problem! I just hope this doesn't happen to mine while i'm asleep or something!

Some of these incidents seem to be evolution in process, removing people from the gene pool; while other occurances appear to be part of Murphy's law in action.
Either way, it shows that one should never let one's intelligence be overawed by an electric appliance.

This one doesn't count at some point a lot of adapter's power cords to any device will break if their used enough. My cousins, sister and her husbands Dell all did the same thing and so did my IBM thinkpad, that's not a big deal.
When you notice get a new one or get electrical tape and wrap it until you can, their not cheap especially if it's no longer under warranty. I have 2 Mac's so far and no problem but one is only 2 weeks old the other 1 yrs. old. and yes I talk about them as if they were children. LOL

here's the deal with cords: if you know how to wrap them up PROPERLY, then you won't twist the cords inside causing such problems to become worst.
