Verizon Saves Voicemail Recording of Man's Late Wife
Every so often it's nice to cover a story with a happy ending. Here's a new one: When Verizon upgraded the phone system in his hometown of Irvington, NY, 80-year-old widower Charles Whiting lost the outgoing message -- recorded by his late wife Catherine -- on his voicemail system. Whiting would call his voicemail everyday just to hear her voice, and feel like she was still with him.Charles said it was the only recording of her that he had.
But lo-and-behold, Verizon had actually archived all of its customers messages, and, after a couple of days of searching, was able to locate and retrieve Catherine's voice message. The message was restored as Whiting's outgoing message and, according to AP, Charles is "very happy."

Glad to see Verizon finaly got somthing right in the landline side of there business. I've been a customer for 22 years (GTE to Verizon), it took them 8 years to figure out the main cable from there pedestal to the box on my house had a short in it. It only showed up when it rained, they would send someone out a week or more later after it dryed out, and tell me there was nothing wrong, finaly guy came out next day by accident and found it. Iwas telling them to do this all along. Voicemail!! I pay good money for this. What do I get? Almost impossable to program greeting messege etc. on it. Then some one calls and leaves a messege,I might get it in a few minutes, hours, days (YeS days) or a week later. No use complaining they say there is nothing they can do. One of there tech's told me to do what he did - go out and buy an answering mechine or a phone with one. I just bought one and soon will be free from this voicemail teariny. But nice to hear they helped this old guy out. Hey Verizon "Can you hear me now???"

I know I am going to regret this, but I work for Verizon, and I can honestly tell you that privacy is extrememly important to the company. Many people have been fired for violating this policy and no one is listening to private messages. Secondly, I Have been in an office where we have helped doctors track people down for organ transplants and will go above and beyond to help people if possible. I also admit there are also times that our hold time is excessive (fios can be a long hold as its the hot thing right now) and people can wait a long time for a tech when they are out of service, but when it comes to things that a human can really control we will really do what is in our power to help when we can. I love my job and most of us love to help people when we can. we wish we could do it more. I am glad to finally see some positive feedback on Verizon for once!

I too have my Mothers voice recordings still on my Verizon phone and its been 4yrs since her passing and I listen to her voice still. That is a blessing for me

I am so glad that Verizon was able to bring back the message for Charles. I considered myself lucky that I was able to record my Moms last message to me before her unexpected death. While it's nice to see her on the VHS tapes I have of weddings and family functions, the personal message that she left for me telling me she loved me means the most. I thought I was a nut for recording it so I can listen to it again so it's nice to see I'm not the only one who's done this. Blessing to Verizon!

Don Horiuchi, when your voicemail saves your messages for you, they aren't really saved in your phone. They're saved on a hard disk at Verizon. There is no way for them to keep the messages for you without them saving them. That's just common sense. If you want complete privacy, then you buy an answering machine with it's own storage, rather than ask Verizon to store it for you. But if you want Verizon to save your messages, then don't complain if they have the messages. There's nothing creepy or sinister about them having your messages. It's just what has to be done to operate that type of system.

sorry, but this is a privacy issue. why was verizon even archiving these things? yes, it is a nice story but the constitutional implications of their keeping this type of stuff should be alarming to people.

To Jenni: I'm glad to hear you can store unlimited voicemail. Verizon delets mine after I think 20 or 30 days or when a certin number of them (how many is any bodys guess)are in the box. I wanted to save my late mom's incomming messeges, they said "NO can do". But I do have hours of video tapes and tape recordings.
JoeMar 20th 2008 8:20PM
Frank, you can always transfer your incoming messages to tape by using the headphone jack of the phone fed into a recorder or digital recorder. Anything in voicemail that is important to you should be transferred as soon as possible to avoid loss in case of hard disk failure.
Marlene GoodwinMar 20th 2008 8:35PM
As a Verizon retiree, I know first hand about the internal workings of our switching equipment systems. Barry S. explainded exactly. Customer's incomming messages are not stored. That is why you get the recording to leave a message on voicemail. This just goes to show that Verizon is still providing quality SERVICE to their customers. Way to go Verizon!

I would expect nothing less from the good people at Verizon. THERE THE CLASS ACT OF THE INDUSTRY

Why do some of you even CARE if Verizon keeps your lame phone messages?? Are they going to learn something deep and dark about your life? Sell it to TMZ? I'm so tired of people worrying about their precious "privacy" in situations like these as if ANYONE gives a poop about any of the minor details of their boring lives.
LindaMar 26th 2008 8:11PM
Now, that's a sweet "Aw, gee" kind of story. But I think somebody ought to help the old fellow make a recording of the message and maybe put it on one of those speaking photograph frames. Doesn't he have a nice techno grandchild?

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!! I WORKED FOR SPRINT TOGETHER WITH NEXTEL SERVICE REPAIR CENTER UNTIL LAST DECEMBER AND I HAD A CUSTOMER MAKE THE SAME REQUEST TO RETRIEVE HIS LATE WIFES MESSAGE. I TRIED FOR OVER A MONTH TO CALL EVERY RESOURCE I HAD AVAILABLE TO ME FROM THE TECH SUPPORT PERSONNEL, WHICH CONSISTED OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS. I WAS TRANSFERED MANY MANY TIMES, PUT ON HOLD FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME AND HUNG UP ON REPEATEDLY SO MUCH THAT I STARTED LOGGING DATES, TIME, OPERATOR NAMES & NUMBERS. I USED ALL THE PRIVATE NUMBERS RESERVED ONLY FOR EMPLOYEES. I ASKED VARIOUS STORE OWNERS, MANAGERS AND CO-WORKERS. I CALLED CORPORATE OFFICES IN EVERY CITY FROM MIAMI TO NEW YORK & DISTRICT MANAGERS. EVERYONE SAID "NO"! I FOUND THIS VERY DISAPPOINTING AND I FEEL GREAT SORROW FOR THIS GENTLEMAN. IT ONLY ADDED TO MY LIST OF CONS THAT I ENCOUNTERED WHILE WORKING FOR THIS COMPANY. AT FIRST I WAS THRILLED TO WORK FOR A COMPANY THAT CLAIMS THAT THEY "CARE" AND WILL WORK WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS ABOVE AND BEYOND! I SOON FOUND THIS TO BE THE FARTHEST FROM THE TRUTH AS ONE COULD BE. MY ALCOHOLIC BOSS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST CERTAIN PEOPLE WHICH I QUICKLY DISCOVERED. THEN, AFTER HE FIRED ME FOR RATTING HIM OUT AND ANOTHER GIRL WHO WORKED THERE, HIM AND THE NEW GUY STARTED DRINKING ALCOHOL IN THE STORE DURING WORKING HOURS. AND I KNOW THIS BECAUSE MY HUSBAND OWNS THE STORE NEXT DOOR WHERE I SAW THE NEW GUY PURCHASE A 4 PACK OF NATURAL LIGHT JUST THIS AFTERNOON. AND THIS OCCURS 2, 3 AND SOMETIMES 4 TIMES A DAY. SO, I SAY ""KUDOS!!!""" TO VERIZON. AND BE FOREWARNED THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU NEED NEW CELL PHONE SERVICE, SKIP SPRINT!
